1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProject Lilliput’s concrete result is Compact Object Headers: in JDK 27, HotSpot enables a 64-bit object header by default, down from the 96-bit layout documented for 64-bit architectures. That saves 32 bits—four bytes—per header, but it does not guarantee a fixed percentage reduction in an application’s total heap use.
What is Project Lilliput in Java?
Project Lilliput is OpenJDK work to reduce the memory overhead associated with Java objects. Each object carries a header with runtime metadata, including information used for class identification, locking, garbage collection, and identity hashing. That overhead can add up in programs that create many small objects.
The early Lilliput discussion included removing or downsizing the klass word—the header’s class-related component. That draft was closed and points to JEP 450 as a duplicate; it should not be mistaken for a design that shipped unchanged. The concrete feature is Compact Object Headers, introduced experimentally in JDK 24 through JEP 450 and enabled by default in JDK 27, according to Oracle’s JDK 27 release notes. The historical draft and project goals are documented by OpenJDK’s Project Lilliput page and the JEP 450 draft.
How much smaller are Java object headers?
Oracle documents a reduction from 96 bits to 64 bits per object header on 64-bit architectures. That is a reduction of 32 bits, or four bytes, for each header—not a claim that every Java object or every application uses four fewer bytes in total.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Layout | Header size | Status and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier documented layout | 96 bits (12 bytes) | Oracle’s comparison point for 64-bit architectures in the JDK 27 release notes |
| Compact Object Headers | 64 bits (8 bytes) | Enabled by default in JDK 27 on 64-bit architectures |
Oracle says the change reduces heap size, improves deployment density, and increases data locality. Those are intended benefits, not a quantified universal outcome: the cited release notes give no general heap-savings percentage or throughput improvement for all workloads.
Does Project Lilliput reduce Java memory use?
It can reduce the header component of memory use, with the greatest potential relevance in workloads containing many small objects. The effect on total heap use depends on the application’s object population and layout. Fields, arrays, alignment, reference compression, and workload composition all influence the overall footprint, so multiplying four bytes by an object count is not a reliable substitute for measuring a particular application.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The practical takeaway is narrower and more defensible: each header is smaller under the documented compact layout, but the available official release notes do not establish a fixed whole-application saving or a general performance gain.
Are compact object headers enabled by default?
Yes. Oracle’s JDK 27 release notes say Compact Object Headers are enabled by default in JDK 27, after their experimental introduction in JDK 24. Those release notes document -XX:-UseCompactObjectHeaders as an option to disable the feature, while noting that the option is planned for deprecation and removal. Check the release notes for the specific JDK build you deploy before relying on that switch.

The same JDK 27 notes say UseCompressedClassPointers is obsolete and class pointers are always compressed in Java objects. Do not treat that older setting as a separate way to opt into or out of compact headers.
Why is fitting metadata into 64 bits complicated?
The header is not simply unused padding: the runtime needs it to represent several kinds of state. A 2023 design note by OpenJDK engineer John Rose describes the compact-layout challenge as balancing locking state, garbage-collection state, identity-hash bits, and a compressed class pointer within 64 bits. The note also discusses potential Valhalla metadata needs competing for limited header space; it is design context, not a statement of later implementation details. See Rose’s Lilliput and Valhalla design note.

Can Java object headers shrink to 32 bits?
OpenJDK’s Project Lilliput page presents 32 bits as a possible secondary goal. It is not the compact layout documented as delivered in JDK 27: that layout is 64 bits on 64-bit architectures. Treat 32 bits as a project ambition, not as the standard shipped header size.
