To adjust grind size on a Breville espresso machine, use the grind-size control for your exact model, change it a little at a time, and assess the next extraction before making another change. On the Barista Express, the numbered dial is the routine adjustment; its adjustable upper burr is a separate way to extend the grind range if the dial cannot get the result you need. The controls and setting ranges differ by model, so do not carry a setting number from one machine to another.
How to adjust grind size on the Barista Express
Breville’s Barista Express tutorial covers grind size and grind amount. Start with the machine’s normal grind-size dial, rather than changing several settings at once. The dial changes how finely or coarsely the coffee is ground; use small increments and assess the result as you tune.
- Identify the model and find its grind-size dial. Use the control and instructions for your machine, not a setting guide for a different Breville model.
- Change the grind setting by a small increment. Keep other preparation choices consistent so you can tell whether the grind adjustment made a difference.
- Prepare another shot and assess its extraction. Breville explains that grind setting regulates how quickly hot water passes through the coffee during extraction. Treat the next extraction as feedback rather than aiming for a supposedly universal dial number.
- Make another small adjustment only if needed. Reassess after each change instead of making several changes together.
Grind size is a tuning control, not a fixed recipe. The appropriate setting can vary with the coffee and the machine; the official instructions do not establish one setting that suits every bean, dose, or Breville model.
How to make the grind finer or coarser
Use the grind-size dial to move toward a finer or coarser grind, then judge the effect through extraction. Because grind setting changes the rate at which water passes through the coffee, adjust incrementally and observe the result on your machine. Breville’s guidance does not establish a universal dial number, shot time, or conversion that applies across beans and models.

When to adjust the Barista Express upper burr
If the normal dial range is not giving you enough adjustment, the Barista Express has an adjustable upper burr that can extend the grind range. This is a separate adjustment from the routine dial change. Breville’s Barista Express instruction manual says some coffees may require a wider range and recommends making only one adjustment at a time.

- Unlock the hopper and empty the beans into an airtight container.
- Run the grinder until it is empty, then remove the hopper.
- Remove the upper burr and its wire handle.
- Move the adjustable top burr one numbered position finer or coarser. Align the selected number with the handle opening.
- Reinstall the wire handle, push the upper burr firmly into position, and lock it.
- Reinstall and lock the hopper, then check extraction.
Make one upper-burr adjustment, secure the burr and hopper as shown in the manual, and assess the next extraction before deciding whether another change is necessary.

Check the configuration of your exact machine before deciding whether you need another grinder. Breville’s Barista Express product hub asks, “Do I need a separate grinder, or is it built in?” but the cited page material does not provide an answer to that question. Consult your model’s product information or manual rather than assuming all Breville espresso machines share the same configuration.
