To use less gas when prices rise, start with the free changes: accelerate and brake smoothly, keep a safe, steady speed, avoid unnecessary idling, combine trips, and remove unneeded cargo. Then check your tire pressure and follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. The savings vary by vehicle, route, weather, and driving habits, so published percentages are estimates—not guarantees.

Which free driving changes save the most fuel?

Accelerate and brake smoothly

Look ahead, leave enough space to coast when traffic slows, and accelerate gradually instead of racing away from stops. Repeated hard braking throws away momentum that you could otherwise use to keep moving. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimated in 2022 that aggressive driving can reduce fuel economy by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic; the actual effect depends on the vehicle and driving conditions. DOE’s driving guidance also gives a broader range of estimated losses: roughly 15%–30% on highways and 10%–40% in stop-and-go conditions.

Choose a safe, steady speed

Driving slower can save gas when it means avoiding unnecessarily high speeds, but do not drive so slowly that you impede traffic or compromise safety. DOE says fuel economy usually drops rapidly above 50 mph. Its 2022 guidance estimated that each 5 mph over 50 mph could add $0.34 per gallon under the assumptions used for that calculation. An earlier Federal Trade Commission (FTC) page cited $0.24 per gallon for each extra 5 mph, based on an older FuelEconomy.gov estimate. Those dated dollar comparisons use different assumptions; treat them as illustrations, not a forecast of what you will save today. DOE’s speed and fuel-economy guidance explains the relationship.

Switch off the engine when appropriate

Idling consumes fuel without taking you anywhere. DOE estimated in 2022 that it can use a quarter to a half gallon per hour, depending on engine size and air-conditioning use. For a personal vehicle, DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends switching off if you are parked or stopped for more than 10 seconds, except in traffic. Follow local laws and your vehicle’s operating guidance; do not switch off in a way that creates a hazard or interferes with safe control of the vehicle. See the AFDC idle-reduction guidance.

Combine errands and consider alternatives for short trips

Several short journeys can use more fuel than combining the same stops into one route, particularly when the engine is cold. When it is practical and accessible, consider walking, cycling, public transit, carpooling, or telecommuting for some trips. The best option depends on your location, mobility, weather, and the safety of the route. DOE lists these approaches in its Consumer Guide to Fuel Economy.

Can cargo and roof racks affect fuel economy?

Remove heavy items you do not need and take off roof cargo equipment when it is not in use. DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide estimates that an extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel economy by around 1%, with a larger effect on smaller vehicles. The result for your vehicle may differ.

A roof box can create aerodynamic drag even when its load is light. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center reported in a 2017 fact sheet that a large, blunt roof cargo box could reduce fuel economy by 2%–8% in city driving, 6%–17% on highways, and 10%–25% at interstate speeds of 65–75 mph. A rear-mounted carrier generally has a smaller effect. These estimates describe particular cargo setups and speeds, not every rack or vehicle. See AFDC’s gas-saving tips fact sheet.

How should you check tires and maintain your vehicle?

Set tire pressure to the vehicle’s specification

Check tire pressure when the tires are cold and use the pressure printed on the driver-side door placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the recommended setting. DOE’s 2022 estimate says correct inflation improves fuel economy by an average of 0.6%, with a potential improvement of up to 3%; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual car. A basic pressure gauge can help you check the tires, but the gauge itself does not save fuel. The FTC also explains how to check tire pressure in its fuel-saving guidance.

Keep up with scheduled service and diagnose problems

Follow the maintenance intervals and specifications in your owner’s manual. DOE reported in 2022 that proper maintenance improves mileage by an average of 4%, while noting that a serious fault—such as a faulty oxygen sensor—can have a much larger effect. If fuel economy changes unexpectedly or a warning light appears, have the vehicle diagnosed rather than replacing parts based on guesswork. The estimate is an average, not a promise that any particular service will improve mileage by 4%. DOE’s guidance on vehicle maintenance gives further context.

Should you use premium gas or a mileage-saving device?

Use the octane your vehicle requires

Check the owner’s manual or fuel door for the octane grade specified for your car. Many vehicles use regular gasoline, and using a higher octane than the manufacturer recommends does not provide a general fuel-economy benefit. Some vehicles do require premium, so do not assume that regular is right for every model. The FTC discusses octane in its consumer guide to stretching gas dollars.

Be skeptical of “guaranteed” mileage boosters

A device or additive promising a dramatic, guaranteed mileage increase deserves caution. In a 2004 consumer alert, the FTC said the Environmental Protection Agency had tested more than 100 purported gas-saving devices and found very few benefits; some could damage engines or increase emissions. That does not establish the performance of every product sold today, but it is a strong reason to avoid unsupported claims and follow the vehicle maker’s recommendations. Read the FTC alert on rising gas prices.

How can you tell whether a change is worth it?

Track fuel use across several fill-ups rather than judging from one trip. If you record the gallons added and miles driven, you can compare miles per gallon before and after a change while accounting for ordinary variation. Keep other factors in mind: route, traffic, weather, load, air-conditioning use, and driving style can all affect the result. There is no single reliable dollar amount that every driver will save today; pump prices, vehicles, routes, and starting habits differ.

When comparing choices, consider the fuel used per trip rather than the pump price alone, whether a change is free or requires maintenance spending, and whether it is safe and practical on your route. For a future vehicle purchase, DOE recommends comparing fuel-efficient options, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, but the immediate measures above apply to your current vehicle.
