Prepare a household evacuation plan before heavy rain, learn how to check Nepal’s official warnings, and be ready to leave when authorities direct—or when danger is clearly developing. For floods, stay out of floodwater and away from flooded roads and bridges. For possible landslides, move out of the slide path if you can do so safely and avoid slopes and channels. Local authorities must identify safe routes and destinations; no generic checklist can do that for every settlement.
Make a household plan before heavy rain
Ask your ward or municipality which areas are exposed, which shelters and routes are designated, how alerts reach your community, and what to do if phones or roads fail. National warnings do not establish a safe route or an evacuation threshold for every locality.
- Choose a destination and routes. Agree on a safe destination and at least one locally appropriate route, plus an alternative. A road beside a river, stream, steep slope, or bridge may become hazardous. Keep the route and contact details on paper as well as on a phone.
- Agree how to reunite. Set a household meeting point and choose an out-of-area contact. Decide who checks on children, older people, neighbors who may need help, and anyone with mobility or medical needs.
- Plan for medicines and animals. Assign who carries essential medicines and documents. Include pets and livestock in the plan, and know what you can do for them without delaying evacuation.
- Prepare essential records. Keep identity and other important documents in a waterproof container; keep a protected digital copy where feasible.
- Pack a portable kit. Include water, ready-to-eat food, a flashlight and batteries, phone and charging option, first-aid supplies, essential medicines, hygiene supplies, document copies, contact details, and some cash. Tailor supplies to your household and review them regularly. Keep the kit accessible, but never delay leaving to collect it.
- Discuss and practice. Include children in age-appropriate conversations and practice leaving by the planned route where appropriate. Clear drains and gutters only when safe and lawful. Do not cut or alter steep slopes; consult qualified local technical authorities about slope-specific work.
Check Nepal’s official warnings
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) links to weather forecasts, special weather forecasts, three-day bulletins, and its Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Service. DHM displays toll-free 1155 for extreme weather and flood information: press 1 for weather forecasts or 2 for flood early warning. Phone menus and availability can change, so check the current DHM information and ask local authorities how national warnings apply to your area.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) publishes disaster bulletins and official notices on its English site, which lists the NEOC toll-free number as 1234. NDRRMA also urges the public to verify disaster information before sharing it. Prefer verified government notices and local authority instructions over unconfirmed forwarded messages.

Nepal’s Disaster Report 2024 describes progress toward multi-hazard early warning, including real-time and three-day rolling hydro-meteorological information and pilots of impact-based landslide forecasting in most hilly and mountainous districts. It does not establish that every community receives alerts directly or has the same warning lead time. The report records smart sirens at 49 vulnerable locations during its reporting period; that is not a verified current count. Ask local authorities what alert signals mean where you live and leave promptly when directed.
What to do during a flood warning or rising water
- Follow local warnings and evacuate when directed. Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by rising water or a blocked route.
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Do not cross a flooded bridge or road, go around barriers, or assume a crossing is safe because the water looks shallow.
- Use a locally appropriate route to higher, safer ground or a designated shelter. If you are in a building, follow emergency instructions and move away from floodwater; contact emergency services if possible.
- Do not enter flowing water to retrieve property or attempt a rescue. Report people in danger to responders.
- If conditions are changing, prioritize people and essential medicines. Do not delay evacuation to pack belongings.
How to recognize possible landslide danger
Unusual cracking or rumbling, new ground cracks or movement, moving trees or rocks, and a sudden increase or decrease in stream flow—or water changing from clear to muddy—can indicate slope movement or upstream debris. These are warning signs, not a precise way to predict a landslide. The Red Cross landslide guidance describes signs to watch for and precautions to take.

What to do if a landslide may be occurring
- If you suspect immediate danger, get out of the likely slide path if you can do so safely. Do not wait for an official message when danger is apparent.
- Stay away from slopes, valleys, channels, and roads below unstable slopes. Do not cross mud or water flowing over a road.
- Warn neighbors if doing so will not delay your escape. Once safe, contact local authorities or emergency responders; do not enter the slide area to attempt a rescue.
- Follow local officials’ instructions about where to go and when an area is safe to return to.
Floods and landslides: different immediate hazards
| Decision | Flood | Landslide or debris flow |
|---|---|---|
| What to monitor | Rain, rivers, and DHM flood alerts. | Cracking, rumbling, ground or tree movement, and sudden stream changes. |
| Where to move | To a locally designated shelter or higher, safer ground by a safe route. | Out of the likely slide path, if it is safe to do so. |
| What to avoid | Floodwater, flooded bridges and roads, and barriers or blocked routes. | Slide areas, channels, and roads below unstable slopes. |
| Risks afterward | Contaminated water, damaged structures, and unsafe infrastructure. | Secondary slides and unstable ground. |
Local officials should determine the routes and thresholds for your community; these general differences are not a substitute for local directions.

- Stay away from flooded areas and landslide sites until authorities say they are safe. Further slides, contaminated water, damaged structures, and downed power lines may remain dangerous. See flood safety guidance and the Red Cross landslide checklist.
- Follow official advice about drinking water, road access, shelter, and return. Do not assume a road or bridge is intact because it looks passable.
- Check on household members and neighbors only from safe locations. Report trapped people to trained responders rather than entering floodwater or unstable ground.
- Do not touch wet electrical equipment or downed power lines. In a damaged building, use a flashlight rather than an open flame.
Access can be disrupted as well as homes and infrastructure: an American Red Cross report published 10 September 2026 describes a flash flood that struck Rasuwa District on 26 August 2026, washing away bridges and disrupting roads. A household contact plan, accessible medicines, and an alternative route matter if travel or communications are interrupted.
