Choose based on where you’re going, when you’re traveling, and whether you need a fixed-route ride or door-to-door service. For trips around Miami Beach, check the free trolley first; Freebee is a separate on-demand option limited to parts of the Beach. Metrobus covers a wider county network, while Metrorail works best when both ends of your trip fit its rail corridor. Rideshare can fill gaps or simplify a trip, but its price and arrival time depend on the specific ride.

First, know what “shuttle” means in Miami

“Shuttle” can refer to different services. Miami Beach has a fixed-route trolley, a separate on-demand service operated with Freebee, and Miami-Dade County lists a free shuttle bus fare category. Their coverage and operating styles are not interchangeable. See the County fare information, the Miami Beach trolley details, and the City’s Freebee service information.

Miami Beach trolley

The City’s trolley is a free circulator with South, Middle, and North Beach routes. It runs daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., with approximately 20-minute average frequency along each route, according to the City’s current trolley page. It uses fixed routes and stops, so it is not a door-to-door ride or a way to reach every part of the county.

Freebee on demand

Freebee provides free door-to-door trips that start and end within its service area: Mid Beach and portions of North Beach. The City recommends requesting a ride about 20 minutes before the desired departure. Published hours are Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.–10 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. It connects with the trolley and County bus service within the zone.

County “shuttle bus”

Miami-Dade’s fare page identifies shuttle bus as a free fare category. That label does not mean every local bus or the Miami Beach trolley is a shuttle; check the actual route and service details for your trip.

Compare the options by trip fit

Option Best fit Coverage and service pattern Planning considerations
Miami Beach trolley Free travel between locations on its Beach routes during operating hours. Fixed routes and stops on South, Middle, and North Beach; daily 8 a.m.–11 p.m.; approximately 20-minute average frequency per route (City of Miami Beach, current page accessed 2026). Check route and stop locations, then allow for the stated average frequency. Not a regionwide or door-to-door service.
Freebee Free door-to-door trip or first/last-mile connection within its zone. Mid Beach and portions of North Beach; hours vary by day. Both pickup and destination must be in the served area. The City recommends requesting about 20 minutes ahead.
Metrobus Trips served by the county bus network, including connections to Miami Beach and many county destinations. County bus routes; exact coverage depends on the route and time. Use the current route and schedule planner. Payment method affects transfer rules.
Metrorail Trips where both ends fit the rail corridor, including trips involving the MIA station. Rail service on its published network; it does not reach every destination. Check the airport service arrangement for your travel day and whether a transfer is needed.
Rideshare Door-to-door travel, awkward transit connections, or a trip outside transit operating hours. Depends on the trip and driver availability. Check your app for the trip’s actual price and ETA. At MIA, follow posted TNC pickup and drop-off instructions.

How much do Metrobus and Metrorail cost?

Miami-Dade County’s current fare page lists a standard Metrobus or Metrorail ride at $2.25 and a one-day pass at $5.65. The page also describes fare capping at $5.65 per day for unlimited Metrobus or Metrorail rides. These are County-listed amounts accessed in 2026; confirm current fares and fare-media rules before traveling.

Does Metrorail go to Miami International Airport?

Yes. Miami-Dade identifies the MIA station on the Orange Line. Metrorail operates daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. Airport service details vary by day: on weekends, Orange Line trains provide airport shuttle service between Earlington Heights and MIA every 15 minutes, and passengers heading to the airport must transfer at Earlington Heights. The County also describes weekday Orange Line service. Check the live service notice and trip planner for your date rather than assuming the weekend arrangement applies on weekdays.

Miami Beach is approximately 10 miles west of MIA, according to the City’s visitor information. That distance alone does not tell you how long a trip will take: the address, traffic, time of day, and transfer plan all matter. The Beach trolley is a local circulator, not an airport shuttle.

When is rideshare the better choice?

Rideshare is worth considering when transit does not serve both ends of your trip, you need door-to-door travel, or your journey falls outside transit hours. No universal fare or travel-time comparison is established: check the app for a trip-specific estimate rather than assuming rideshare is always faster or more expensive.

At Miami International Airport, transportation network companies have designated pickup and drop-off zones under the airport’s operating rules. Follow current airport signage and the app’s instructions; do not assume a rideshare can collect you at any curb. See the Miami-Dade Aviation Department’s TNC operating directive.

How to choose for your trip

  1. Check both endpoints. If both are on Miami Beach, compare the trolley’s routes and stops with Freebee’s zone. For trips elsewhere, check County bus and rail routes.
  2. Match the service hours. Confirm the operating window for the day you travel, particularly for Freebee and late trips.
  3. Compare the complete transit fare. Include any bus or rail transfers and confirm how your payment method treats them.
  4. For airport trips, plan the rail connection. Confirm Orange Line service and any transfer requirement for your travel day.
  5. Use rideshare estimates for the actual trip. Check current fare and ETA in the app, and at MIA follow the designated pickup instructions.

For trolley arrivals, the City says real-time tracking is available through Transit App, with premium trolley-tracking features covered by the City. Stop-ID text messages and calls are alternatives for ETA information. Details are on the City’s trolley page.
