For natural-looking HDR in The Witcher 3, calibrate your display and platform first, then adjust the game in small steps while checking shadow detail, bright highlights, and color intensity in the same scene. There is no verified universal preset: the right result depends on your platform and game build, display, tone mapping, and room lighting. This guide focuses on the Remastered version released September 29, 2026; its HDR controls and tone mapping differ from the earlier version.

Check which version and platform you are using

CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The studio says the release updates tone mapping and the HDR calibration panel, among other rendering changes. Its announcement describes “Updated tone mapping for improved colors, lighting, contrast and detail.” CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement does not prescribe slider values.

Older guides may describe different controls or defaults. The December 2022 next-gen update documented earlier platform differences, and a 2025 analysis of the pre-Remastered PC version lists Gamma as well as Max Monitor Brightness and Paper White. Do not treat those older values as Remastered defaults. The 2022 next-gen update notes and the 2025 PC analysis concern earlier implementations.

Calibrate HDR on your display or platform first

HDR expands the contrast and range of color and brightness compared with SDR, but the result depends on the connected display and setup. Sony’s support documentation puts it this way: “HDR delivers a higher contrast—or larger color and brightness range—than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).” Sony’s PS5 HDR instructions also note that image quality depends on the connected entertainment setup.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

On PS5

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set HDR to enable HDR.
  2. From Video Output, select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration steps for your display.

For PC or Xbox, use the HDR calibration controls provided by your operating system, console, or display where available. The sources cited here establish Sony’s PS5 workflow, not one exact menu path for Xbox or every PC storefront.

Make small in-game adjustments for natural color

Once system HDR is calibrated, find the game’s HDR calibration options in its display or video settings, if they are available. Use a repeatable scene with both dark areas and bright sources—such as a shadowed interior with a window or a scene containing bright sky and fire—so you can judge changes consistently.

Samsung 32” Odyssey G5 (G50F) Series QHD Gaming Monitor
  • Samsung’s 32” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals for exhilarating gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before.
  • QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
  • With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers crisp, clear hues from various viewpoints.
  • 180Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (GtG) allow fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, plus G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
  1. Keep shadow detail visible without lifting blacks. Dark textures should remain discernible, but black areas should not turn gray or hazy.
  2. Preserve bright detail. Look for texture in clouds and light sources rather than allowing them to become featureless white patches.
  3. Check color intensity. Skin, foliage, and fire should look convincing rather than unnaturally vivid.
  4. Change one control at a time. If the image looks washed out or too bright, try reducing excessive Paper White or saturation in small increments, then return to the same scene to judge the effect. This is a troubleshooting approach, not a tested numeric prescription.

A brighter image is not automatically a better HDR image: raising scene brightness can make the picture easier to see while also weakening contrast or making highlights feel harsh. Aim for readable dark detail and textured highlights together, with restrained colors.

Control Displayed range Displayed default How to use the information
Max Monitor Brightness 300–4000 nits 500 These are values listed by the PC analysis; the range and default are not a universal target for every display.
Paper White 100–500 nits 300 The displayed default is an observation, not a recommendation or proof of the luminance your display will produce.
Saturation 0–1 0.20 Use the control to correct colors that look excessively vivid, judging against a consistent scene.

The analysis also reports that its tested PC build ignores EDID or OS-calibrated peak brightness. Treat that as an observation of the tested build, not a general claim about every PC configuration. Read the September 30, 2026 PC Remastered analysis for its methodology and context.

Account for early Remastered patches

Settings can behave differently as game builds change. On October 1, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 5.00b notes for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC included lighting adjustments and fixes for interiors that appeared too dark. The studio’s PC Hotfix 5.00c notes from the same day describe Velen visual adjustments involving bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and Path Tracing lighting.

If the HDR calibration controls are missing on a console, check that the game is updated: CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered notes say the panel was updated and that settings sometimes failed to appear on consoles. Confirm the installed build before changing settings based on older guidance.

Why there is no single “best” HDR number

Paper White, display peak brightness, room lighting, platform tone mapping, and game build all affect how bright or saturated an image appears. A setting that looks balanced in a dim room on one display may look too bright elsewhere. No controlled cross-platform comparison establishes one best set of values for Remastered on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Use any published slider values only as a reference for the specific platform and build they describe. The practical test is whether your chosen scene retains shadow texture and highlight detail without gray blacks, clipped bright areas, or exaggerated colors.
