Sun announced the Sun Ray 2 and Sun Ray 2FS on April 12, 2006, as second-generation thin clients. The Sun Ray 2 was the lower-cost model; the 2FS added fiber connectivity and dual-monitor support. Their listed launch prices—$249 and $499—are historical, not current prices.
What a Sun Ray thin client does
A thin client is a compact endpoint that relies on server-hosted computing rather than running a full desktop environment locally. Sun Ray devices were designed to connect users to sessions held on a server. Oracle’s archived Sun Ray System Overview explains that a session could follow a user to another desktop unit (DTU), the term used for the device.
Both new models included smart-card slots intended for hot desking: a user could move the card to another device and resume the session there. The experience depended on the Sun Ray server environment; the device itself was not a standalone PC.

Windows access through Remote Desktop Protocol
Sun and Microsoft announced in May 2005 that Sun had licensed Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for the Sun Ray line. The arrangement enabled Sun Ray clients to access Windows Terminal Services on Windows Server 2003. This describes the interoperability announced at the time; it does not establish compatibility with current Windows releases. The announcement is documented in Microsoft’s May 13, 2005 release.
How the 2006 launch fit the Sun Ray line
The Sun Ray 2 generation was not the beginning of the product family. Sun’s archived product-history document records the original Sun Ray 1 and Sun Ray Server Software 1.0 release in August 1999, with subsequent hardware and software milestones through 2005. The 2006 announcement therefore extended an established server-based desktop system.
