Opened whiskey does not have one universal expiration date. Its aroma, flavor and sometimes color can change gradually after air gets into the bottle, but the recommendations for when to drink it vary: The Glenlivet advises three to six months, Whisky.com estimates six months to a year, and Dewar’s says quality can last several years. These are different quality guidelines, not scientifically established safety cutoffs.
What changes after you open whiskey?
Air exposure and repeated opening can gradually alter whiskey’s aroma and flavor. Oxidation may also change its color. Suntory notes that alcohol can evaporate over time and the flavor balance can shift. These changes describe quality, not a guaranteed point when the whiskey becomes unsafe to drink.
The sources do not establish a measured, universal shelf-life limit or a precise timetable based on fill level, whiskey style or proof. A bottle’s condition depends in part on how it is stored and handled.
How long do different sources recommend?
| Source | Opened-bottle guidance | What the guidance means |
|---|---|---|
| The Glenlivet, US FAQ | Three to six months | The Glenlivet recommends enjoying the bottle within this period because subtle flavor changes may appear from oxidation. |
| The Glenlivet, general FAQ | Within six months | The brand says whiskey can still be drunk afterward, though oxidation may subtly affect color and flavor. |
| Whisky.com, Whisky: Stability and Storage | About six months to one year | Its guide says oxygen can change the taste over time; whiskey does not thereby go bad, but it may lose flavor. |
| Dewar’s FAQ | Several years | Dewar’s says quality can be maintained for several years, with flavor gradually changing through oxidation. |
| Suntory customer FAQ | No fixed period | Suntory says duration depends on storage and handling, so it cannot be stated uniformly. |
These are source-specific recommendations and estimates, not results of a shared experiment or a single standard for all bottles. Treat them as guidance about expected quality rather than a countdown to a definite expiration.

How to store an opened bottle
- Close it securely after each pour. Limiting the time the bottle is open reduces ongoing exposure to air.
- Keep it upright. Jameson advises upright storage because prolonged contact between high-alcohol whiskey and the cork can deteriorate the cork and affect flavor.
- Choose a cool, stable place away from sunlight and heat. The Glenlivet recommends a cool, odor-free, ventilated location; Whisky.com also advises dark storage.
- Avoid damp conditions. Moisture can damage the label or closure.
What to do with a nearly empty bottle
With less whiskey in the bottle, there is more air space above the liquid. If you plan to keep the remainder, Whisky.com recommends carefully transferring it to a smaller bottle to reduce that space. Use a clean, tightly capped glass bottle and pour gently to avoid bubbling the whiskey. This can reduce air space, but it does not guarantee that the flavor will remain unchanged or extend its quality by a specific amount of time.
How to judge a bottle you have kept
Use the storage history and your own senses to decide whether the whiskey still tastes the way you want it to. Gradual changes in aroma, flavor or color are consistent with the changes described by the sources; they do not, by themselves, establish a universal expiration date. If the flavor has become less enjoyable, that is a quality reason to stop drinking it, even if no fixed time limit has passed.
