Fluid Framework lets an application synchronize shared state across connected clients. To get started, build around a Fluid container that holds shared objects, run Microsoft’s Dice Roller tutorial locally, then configure the app to connect to Azure Fluid Relay if you need a managed hosted service. Your application still needs to handle authentication, permissions, container discovery, and any export feature.
How Fluid Framework collaboration works
Microsoft Learn describes Fluid Framework as “a collection of client libraries for distributing and synchronizing shared state” in its Azure Fluid Relay overview. The framework is client-centric: clients update shared data, while Azure Fluid Relay receives operations, sequences them, and returns the ordered operations to connected clients. Each client then updates its local state.
This architecture can reduce the amount of collaboration-specific server logic an application needs. It does not replace the application’s own access rules, product logic, discovery mechanisms, or data export experience.
Containers and shared objects
Containers define the collaborative session
A Fluid container is the primary unit of encapsulation for a collaborative session. It groups shared objects and provides lifecycle APIs. For Azure Fluid Relay, Microsoft documents the @fluidframework/azure-client package as the service-specific client for creating and loading containers. A Fluid app combines the core framework package with a client for its chosen service. See Microsoft’s guide to connecting to Azure Fluid Relay.

Shared objects hold the data
Shared objects include distributed data structures and data objects. A distributed data structure can be used in application code much like a local structure, but changes are synchronized to connected clients using the same container. Microsoft’s documentation covers key-value data, sequences, and SharedString for collaborative text. The Fluid Framework distributed data structures guide describes the available concepts.
For example, a collaborative editor could keep text in a shared sequence while the surrounding container holds other session data. Clients need access to the same container to participate in that shared state.

Start with the Dice Roller tutorial
Microsoft’s Dice Roller quickstart teaches the development path in two stages: build and run the application against a local Fluid server, then reconfigure it to use Azure Fluid Relay. The hosted stage requires an Azure account and a provisioned Fluid Relay service.
The quickstart page, last updated in 2023, lists Node.js 12.17 or later. Treat that as the tutorial’s documented requirement at that time, not as a current recommendation: check the package and setup guidance linked from the current tutorial before choosing a Node.js version or copying dependency versions.

Connect the app to Azure Fluid Relay
The Azure connection guide configures AzureClient with a tenant ID, service URL, and token provider. The token provider is a security boundary, not just a configuration detail.
Keep signing secrets out of the client
Microsoft’s connection guide describes InsecureTokenProvider as a development-only option. Do not ship it in a released client bundle: doing so exposes the tenant key. For a production design, use a developer-controlled backend to issue a signed token to an authorized client.

Keep container discovery and authorization in your app
A container ID is not a complete application permission system. Maintain your own mapping from containers to friendly names, users, or records, and decide in your application which users may receive a valid token. The reviewed Azure Fluid Relay guide says the service itself does not know which users should have access. If users need to export their work, build that feature from the current state of the app’s Fluid data structures.

For a deployed Azure Fluid Relay resource, storage region is selected when the resource is created. Microsoft’s data storage documentation says the region cannot be changed for that resource; using another region requires a new resource. The page also discusses replication for availability. Check current regional availability, service limits, and data-handling details before choosing deployment geography.

Explore presence with the audience tutorial
After learning shared-state basics, Microsoft’s audience tutorial provides a React example that displays people currently connected to a container. It is a useful next step for session presence, but it is separate from the core data-synchronization model.
