What is the main difference between Lubuntu and Xubuntu?
Both are Ubuntu-based Linux distributions, but they use different desktop environments. Lubuntu describes itself as an Ubuntu-based distribution using LXQt; Xubuntu’s 26.04 release uses Xfce 4.20. Choose Lubuntu if you prefer LXQt
Lubuntu’s defining desktop is LXQt. Its project describes its goal as providing a lightweight yet functional distribution based on Ubuntu. That description is useful context, but it does not prove that Lubuntu will use less memory or feel faster than Xubuntu on every computer.
Choose Xubuntu if you prefer Xfce
Xubuntu 26.04 uses Xfce 4.20. If you have used Xfce before or prefer how it handles panels, menus, settings, and windows, that preference may matter more than a general claim about which distribution is “lighter.”

The included software varies by release, so treat these as snapshots of the cited 26.04 information rather than permanent package promises or complete inventories.

If a particular application matters to you, check the notes for the exact release you intend to install. You can also install many applications after setup, so the default selection need not determine your choice by itself.

Which is better for an old PC, or which is lighter?
The available official information does not establish that Lubuntu is always better for an older computer or that it consistently uses less memory than Xubuntu. Lubuntu’s project says it has moved beyond its former focus on low-end hardware, so old minimum-RAM figures should not be treated as current requirements. Xubuntu’s installation documentation says it generally runs on most computers built since 2007, but that broad guidance is not a current minimum-specification table or a head-to-head performance test. For a useful comparison, try each distribution in a live session on the computer you plan to use. Test your own typical workload—especially your browser, frequently used applications, and connected peripherals—and judge responsiveness for yourself. This is practical advice, not a reported benchmark: no controlled, same-machine Lubuntu-versus-Xubuntu performance result is established by the cited project material.

How long are the cited 26.04 releases supported?
Xubuntu’s team says Xubuntu 26.04 is an LTS release supported for three years, until April 2029. Xubuntu 26.04 announcement
Lubuntu’s 26.04 release information also describes a three-year LTS period ending in April 2029. However, that page also contains a Beta-status notice despite giving a scheduled release date of April 23, 2026. Check Lubuntu’s current download and release information to confirm the release’s status before installing. What do you need to install either distribution?
You may need a USB stick or SD card to create installation media. Xubuntu documentation says media with 2 GB or more storage can be used, but ISO sizes vary by release; check the current download instructions before choosing or buying media. Xubuntu installation documentation

- Match the release cadence. Compare an LTS release with an LTS release, and confirm each one’s current availability and support information.
- Try the desktop workflow. Use each live session to explore panels, menus, settings, and window behavior.
- Check the included applications. Use the release notes for the versions you are actually considering.
- Test the same computer and workload. Open your usual browser tabs and applications, and check the peripherals you rely on.
- Weigh support against your needs. Choose a release whose support period and end date suit how long you plan to keep it installed.
