Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want one recommendation, start with Metaphor: ReFantazio: it comes closest to pairing painterly presentation with a party-focused, turn-based RPG. For a different follow-up, choose by what you want to carry forward from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—stylish world-building, timed combat inputs, emotional storytelling, or deeper battle systems. None is a sequel or an exact substitute.
What to look for after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Expedition 33 combines turn-based combat with real-time actions: players can dodge, parry, and counter, use rhythm-based attack combos, and target enemies freely. Its fantasy setting draws on Belle Époque France, while its story follows Gustave, Maelle, and their fellow expeditioners as they try to break the Paintress’ cycle of death. The game released April 24, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, according to Bandai Namco.
That mix makes “similar” a matter of preference. The games below are turn-based RPGs, but they do not all reproduce Expedition 33’s reactive dodge-and-parry combat or its tone. Pick the quality you most want in your next game.
Best overall match: Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the strongest starting point if the combination you want is distinctive art direction and a party-based turn-based RPG. It is the closest blend of painted visual style and party combat among these recommendations, making it a more natural follow-up than a game chosen solely for one shared feature.

For a stylish, substantial turn-based RPG
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal suits players who want another sharply stylized world and a substantial turn-based adventure. GamesRadar describes it as an expanded version of Persona 5, with quality-of-life and gameplay adjustments as well as additional characters. It is a good choice when the appeal of Expedition 33 was its strong visual identity and a long-form RPG experience rather than a close match in combat mechanics.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition
For a broad fantasy journey with companions and approachable turn-based combat, consider Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. GamesRadar characterizes it as an open-zone fantasy adventure. It is a genre recommendation rather than a close tonal match for Expedition 33.
For timed inputs during turn-based battles
Sea of Stars
Sea of Stars builds timed hits and blocks into its turn-based encounters, so it is a strong option if you enjoy acting on the rhythm of a battle instead of selecting actions and waiting passively. Its tone is warmer and its difficulty lighter than Expedition 33’s, so the shared appeal is the interactive timing—not the same mood or level of challenge.

For emotional storytelling and classic pacing
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster
Choose Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster if you want a classic RPG with an emotionally weighty story, including a focus on mortality. It offers a useful point of comparison for Expedition 33’s emotional concerns, but its combat uses more traditional turns and its pacing feels older. Go in expecting a classic rather than a modernized version of Expedition 33.
For strategic battles and a distinctive visual identity
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II emphasizes strategic turn-based combat, including its Break and Boost systems, alongside a distinctive visual style. It is a good fit if you want battles that reward planning and timing your resources. Its anthology structure is a notable difference from Expedition 33’s focused expedition story, so the strongest overlap is in battle-system interest and art direction.

- Stylish, substantial turn-based adventure: Persona 5 Royal.
- Timed actions within turn-based combat: Sea of Stars.
- Emotional classic with traditional turns: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.
- Strategic battles and a visual signature: OCTOPATH TRAVELER II.

Expedition 33’s combat is not just menu-based: its creator, Guillaume Broche, described the aim as giving each character a distinct playstyle and unique mechanics and skill tree in an Xbox Wire interview. If the real-time parry element is the feature you want most, note that the recommendations here remain turn-based RPGs; a full action game would be a different kind of follow-up.
