To keep playing a Game Pass title after it leaves the catalog, buy that game before it departs. Game Pass access is not the same as owning a copy, and Xbox’s “Leaving soon” listings let you check which games are due to leave and review the current purchase offer.
1. Find out when the game is leaving
Check the Game Pass catalog’s Leaving soon section and Xbox’s departure announcements. Xbox says it confirms departing titles in regular Xbox Wire posts and mobile notifications; its November 17, 2020 Xbox Wire guidance also suggested moving an exiting game up your play queue. That article does not establish a fixed notice period, so check the catalog and announcements rather than relying on a particular number of days.
2. Buy the game before it leaves
Open the game’s current Xbox listing and check the exact title, edition, region, price, and any member offer. The Game Pass catalog currently says members can “buy now and save up to 20%” on games leaving the service. That is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount on every title; confirm the offer shown for your game before purchasing.
Buying the game is the supported way to continue playing after catalog access ends. A Game Pass subscription by itself does not give you a permanent license to a departing title.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
3. Check whether a disc is an option
A physical copy may work if the specific game has a disc release and your console can use it. Confirm both before buying: physical availability and compatibility depend on the title and console. The catalog information does not establish a suitable disc edition for any particular game.
What happens to cloud play and saves?
The catalog promotes cloud gaming generally, but it does not say that streaming access continues after a game leaves the catalog. Likewise, the available Xbox information here does not establish what happens to saves after removal. Do not assume either cloud availability or save retention; check current guidance for the specific title and account if those details affect your decision.
