Tank crews used bundled logs called fascines to fill ditches and trenches, creating a rough crossing for a tank and those following it. The clearest detailed example is from the First World War Battle of Cambrai in 1917—not proof that WWII tanks routinely used logs to escape mud. A fascine solved an obstacle-crossing problem; getting a tank unstuck in soft ground was a different task.

How a fascine helped a tank cross a trench

A fascine was a bundle of wood carried on a tank and released into a ditch or trench. Once it landed in the gap, the mass of timber gave the tank a surface to climb across. Following vehicles could use the same crossing. It was not simply a log strapped to the tank to improve track grip.

The Tank Museum describes the Cambrai fascine as a framed bundle made from 75 ordinary fascines. It weighed about 1.5 tons, measured roughly 4 feet 6 inches in diameter and 10 feet wide, and included a railway sleeper for attachment to the tank. The tank carried it raised, moved it forward before reaching the obstacle, then released it into the trench. In the account, the bundle became distorted during use and was not recovered for reuse. The Tank Museum’s account of the Cambrai fascine explains the device and its deployment.

This approach addressed a gap too wide or steep for the tank to cross unaided. It did not strengthen the engine or make the tracks grip ordinary mud better.

What the WWII evidence establishes—and what it does not

Fascines predate the Second World War. The National Army Museum describes tanks tipping bundles of sticks into enemy ditches at Cambrai in 1917 to make crossings for tanks and infantry. Its account of 1917 places the method in that First World War setting.

Churchill tanks and their specialist adaptations belong to the history of WWII engineering. The Tank Museum’s Churchill tank overview gives vehicle context, but the available source does not document a particular Churchill fascine operation or establish how often one was used. It would therefore be misleading to say that WWII tanks generally carried logs to get through mud.

A specific WWII record does show that mud and recovery were practical concerns. The Australian War Memorial catalogues a 22-minute, 28-second Australian Army research film made in New Guinea on 18 January 1945. It documents comparative trials of Churchill and Sherman tanks, including mud, hill-climbing, scrub, recovery and maintenance tests. The catalogue names a Dolly tractor and a recovery vehicle adapted from a General Lee tank, but does not say the trials used logs or fascines. The Australian War Memorial film record identifies the trials and their scope.

Fascines versus mud recovery

Question Trench crossing Mud or bog recovery
Problem A ditch or trench creates a gap the tank cannot cross unaided. Soft ground prevents a vehicle from moving freely or leaves it stuck.
What the evidence describes A tank-borne fascine dropped into a trench at Cambrai in 1917, as described by The Tank Museum and the National Army Museum. The Australian War Memorial records 1945 mud and recovery trials, but does not identify logs or fascines as equipment used in them.
Purpose of the device or activity Fill the gap with timber to create a crossing. Test or provide recovery; the 1945 catalogue record identifies recovery vehicles but does not specify a log-based method.
WWII frequency or success rate Not established by these sources. Not established by these sources.

Battlefields could contain mud, flooded ground, shell holes and trenches at once, but those conditions do not make their engineering solutions interchangeable. A log carried on a vehicle might have served other field-expedient purposes; the sources cited here do not establish those uses comprehensively.

A firsthand description of the Cambrai crossing

The Tank Museum reproduces an account by the commander of a Mark IV in 5th (E) Battalion, describing the Hindenburg Line in the First World War:

“The Hindenburg Line was a truly formidable obstacle and we naturally had a few exciting moments. First, poised over the deep and wide excavation; then, releasing the fascine – would it drop alright? – we saw it lumber beautifully to the bottom. Could we get over? One can imagine our doubts as we had witnessed a few ghastly failures at Wailly…”
