For SNES, choose a handheld first for a comfortable D-pad and shoulder buttons, a screen that can present 4:3 games without stretching, and a size you will actually carry and use. A compact Linux clamshell such as the ANBERNIC RG 34XXSP and a larger Android device such as the Retroid Pocket 4 family illustrate different trade-offs—not universal winners. Manufacturer specifications do not establish that every SNES game will run correctly, so check compatibility for the specific titles you want.
What matters most for SNES games
Controls and comfort
SNES games were designed around a traditional controller. Look for a D-pad that feels precise to you, face buttons you can reach without shifting your grip, and accessible shoulder buttons. The available sources do not include controlled comparisons of these devices’ comfort or measured input latency, so specifications alone cannot establish which has the best controls. If possible, try the layout or check hands-on reviews for the exact model and revision.
Screen shape and image size
SNES games are from the 4:3 era. A handheld should let you preserve the game’s intended proportions rather than stretch it to fill a taller or wider panel; accept side bars if needed. Also consider whether the displayed game image is large enough for comfortable play. An editorial search-result summary identifies the Miyoo Mini Plus as having a 640×480 4:3 screen, a useful comparison lead, but its underlying article was not retrievable and that summary is not a substitute for checking current official specifications: Lost In Consoles’ SNES handheld summary.
Portability and capability
A small clamshell protects its screen when shut and is easy to tuck away; a larger device may be more comfortable for longer sessions. If SNES is your main use, extra processing power may add cost without helping the games you play. If you also want newer systems, compare the operating system, hardware, and compatibility evidence for those systems too. A buyer discussion about replaying Mega Man X at night or while travelling illustrates those practical priorities, but is an individual opinion, not a tested comparison: Reddit buyer discussion.

When the RG 34XXSP fits
Consider it if a compact clamshell and Linux-based setup match how you plan to play. ANBERNIC lists “Supports:ported games and other 30+ emulators;” and says users can download related-format games. That wording does not promise that every SNES title works. The listing also includes a screen protector in the box, so check the bundle before buying a duplicate.
When the Retroid Pocket 4 family fits
Consider the Retroid models if you prefer Android and want a 4.7-inch touch screen with a TF card slot. The standard Pocket 4 and Pro differ in the listed Android version and RAM; the shared listing gives both 128GB internal storage and a 5000mAh battery. The official page does not establish that either is better value for SNES alone.

Check compatibility for the games you care about
Do not treat an emulator count or a device’s general capability as proof that your full SNES library will run well. Performance can depend on the emulator or core, firmware, the individual game, and special enhancement chips. The available compatibility reference discusses Snes9x 2002 and Snes9x 2010 for the older Retroid Pocket 2 and gives different performance grades; it does not establish results for the Pocket 4, the RG 34XXSP, or every SNES title. See the Retroid Handhelds Wiki emulator reference as limited, model-specific community guidance—not a guarantee for newer hardware.
- Search for reports covering the exact handheld revision and the games you intend to play.
- Check which emulator or core those reports use, and whether they mention enhancement-chip titles.
- Distinguish a general statement that a system is supported from evidence that a particular game runs acceptably.
Plan for setup, storage, and game files
The RG 34XXSP is listed with Linux and TF/MicroSD expansion. The Retroid Pocket 4 models are listed with Android and a TF card slot. These differences affect setup, but the product pages do not provide a complete, comparable setup guide. Before ordering, check instructions for the exact model, what storage card or accessories the chosen bundle includes, and whether you are comfortable with the required configuration. Do not assume games or a memory card are included just because a listing mentions storage or downloadable games.

Quick Recap
Make the choice against your own use
- Set the use case: Decide whether you mainly want SNES, or also expect to use other systems. Avoid paying for capability that does not matter to you.
- Choose the form factor: Prioritize a pocketable clamshell if carry and screen protection matter most; consider a larger screen if grip comfort and longer sessions matter more.
- Check the controls and image: Confirm D-pad and shoulder-button placement, then look for settings or reliable demonstrations showing 4:3 games displayed without stretching.
- Verify game-specific compatibility: Look for evidence on your exact model and titles, especially games using enhancement chips. Treat results for older models as limited evidence.
- Check the live listing: Confirm the exact revision, current price and stock, included card or storage, shipping region, warranty, and return terms before purchase.
