Visual Studio 2022 introduced its combined All-In-One Search in version 17.5, refined that search and added several Git workflow improvements in 17.6, then expanded code-search navigation in 17.12. These are changes from specific releases, not a description of the newest Visual Studio update: Microsoft’s release notes identify version 17.14 as current in the documentation reviewed here.
What changed in Visual Studio 2022 search?
Visual Studio 2022 17.5 brought code search and IDE feature search into one interface called All-In-One Search. Microsoft described it as combining code (Ctrl+T) and IDE feature (Ctrl+Q) search in one UI. Microsoft’s 17.5 release notes document the initial experience.
Code Search with Ctrl+T
Use Ctrl+T to search for files, types, and members across a solution. Selecting a result opens a preview panel with nearby code, so you can inspect context without opening the file. Microsoft also says edits can be made within the search window.
IDE feature search with Ctrl+Q
Use Ctrl+Q to find IDE tools, options, templates, and components. The key distinction is the search target: Ctrl+T is for code in the solution; Ctrl+Q is for Visual Studio’s own features.

Enable or disable the experience
Microsoft said All-In-One Search would be enabled gradually. To manage it manually in 17.5, open Tools > Manage Preview Features, select or clear New Visual Studio Search experience (restart required), then restart Visual Studio.
What did Visual Studio 17.6 change in search?
Version 17.6 refined the All-In-One Search presentation. Its results use a two-line layout; the search window remembers its size and location and retains the selected preview state; and the default preview appears below the results. Microsoft’s 17.6 release notes also direct users to Tools > Manage Preview Features to enable the experience.

What Git improvements arrived in Visual Studio 17.6?
The 17.6 notes list targeted changes across commit-message lookup, merge review, history, naming, issue references, and staging. They do not report a benchmark or establish that every Git operation became faster.
Find issues and work items from commit messages
Search from the commit-message integration was improved for GitHub Issues and Azure DevOps Work Items. Results can include items that are not recently updated or are not directly related to the signed-in user, provided they belong to the relevant project or repository.

Review merges and load history
The merge dialog now clarifies how many files are affected and warns when conflicts may exist. Git History loading was also described as faster, but Microsoft did not publish a measured speed increase.
Create branches and tags with cleaner names
The branch and tag creation dialogs replace spaces with dashes in names.
Reference GitHub issues or pull requests
You can enter # in the commit-message box to reference a GitHub issue or pull request. Visual Studio requests authentication when needed to access the related issues.
Unstage individual lines
Visual Studio 17.6 added line-by-line unstaging, extending the existing interactive workflow for staging selected lines. This is useful when a change contains lines that should not be included in the next commit.

What search features came later?
Visual Studio 2022 17.12 added two distinct improvements, documented in Microsoft’s 17.12 release notes, dated November 12, 2024.
Jump to a line from Code Search
Enter a colon followed by a line number to navigate within the current document—for example, :39. To target another document, enter a filename and line number, such as Order:43.
Refresh Find in Files results
Find in Files gained a refresh option that updates the previous result set after code changes. This is different from Modify Find, which reopens the search with its previous criteria.
How should you interpret these release changes?
The release numbers matter because the title’s “update” could refer to different points in Visual Studio 2022’s history. The combined search interface is a 17.5 change, 17.6 adds search presentation refinements and Git workflow features, and 17.12 adds line navigation and Find in Files refresh. Microsoft’s inspected release history and 17.14 release notes identify 17.14 as current in that documentation. For the features above, consult the notes for the relevant version rather than assuming they describe the latest update.
