Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the Steam version of Final Fantasy IX crashes, will not launch, or opens to a black screen, start by verifying its game files in Steam. Square Enix specifically recommends that check for these symptoms. For crashes during play, its additional steps include changing display mode, lowering resolution, and updating graphics drivers.
Start with Steam’s file integrity check
Square Enix recommends checking the installation when the PC version crashes, fails to start, or shows a black screen. In Steam, open Library, right-click FINAL FANTASY IX, select Properties, then open Installed Files and choose the option to verify the integrity of the game files. The cited support article uses the older label “Verify integrity of game cache”; Steam’s wording and menu organization can change.
Steam checks the installed files and replaces or reacquires files it finds missing or damaged. Let the check finish, then try launching the game again before changing other settings. Square Enix’s symptom-specific guidance names file verification as the first step for these launch and display problems.
If the game crashes during play
Square Enix’s general PC crash guidance suggests working through display, graphics, software-interference, and peripheral checks. Try one change at a time where practical, then repeat the situation that caused the crash.

Change display mode and resolution
- Switch between windowed and fullscreen mode.
- Lower the game’s screen resolution and test again.
The support article does not specify a preferred mode or resolution, nor does it rank these checks. If a change makes the game harder to use, revert it before trying the next one.
Update graphics drivers
Check for an updated graphics driver for your PC’s graphics hardware and install it using the appropriate vendor or PC-manufacturer method. The publisher recommends updating driver software but does not name a specific driver version or promise that an update will solve every crash.

Temporarily check for software or peripheral interference
Square Enix recommends checking whether security software or the operating-system firewall is monitoring the game, and testing without peripheral devices. Treat these as short diagnostic tests: change only the relevant monitoring setting if necessary, and restore your normal security protections afterward. Disconnect nonessential peripherals for a test, then reconnect them one at a time. The publisher does not identify a particular security product or device as the cause.
If the game still will not launch
After file verification and basic checks, restart the PC and make sure the game is up to date. Square Enix’s general support guidance also recommends keeping the PC online and reinstalling the game if earlier steps fail. Reinstalling is more disruptive than verifying files, so leave it until later in the sequence; back up any saves or configuration data you need to preserve before removing the game.
Separate a game crash from a PC crash
If only Final Fantasy IX closes, use the game-specific checks above. If the entire computer shuts down, restarts, or displays a blue screen, that is a different failure. Square Enix says a whole-computer crash or shutdown may indicate a hardware issue; those symptoms alone do not identify a faulty component.
If you contact Square Enix support, its general article asks players to include MSINFO and DxDiag diagnostic files. The article provides instructions for generating those files. Collecting them gives support system information without guessing at the cause.

Using Moguri or Memoria? Test the unmodified game first
Steam community posts describe different mod-related cases: a Steam Deck setup with a failed Moguri installation and a black screen, a black screen at a scene transition, and an older launch failure associated with a Moguri Steam Overlay hook. These are user reports about distinct configurations, not confirmed general causes or official fixes. See the reports on a Steam Deck Moguri installation, a scene-transition black screen, and an older overlay-hook launch issue.
If the problem began after installing or updating Moguri or Memoria, first determine whether the game works without the mods. Return to a clean base installation, verify its files in Steam, and test that version before trying instructions specific to a particular mod setup. The available reports do not establish current mod compatibility, a version-specific fix, or one universal mod culprit. Avoid applying potentially disruptive workarounds, such as editing registry entries or hooks, based only on an older user report.
