In the 2026 NWSL season, eight of the league’s 16 teams qualify for a single-elimination playoff. All eight start in the quarterfinals: seeds 1–8, 2–7, 3–6 and 4–5. Regular-season points determine the seeds, with a seven-step tiebreaker used when teams finish level. A tied playoff match goes to two full 15-minute extra-time periods and then, if needed, a penalty shoot-out.
How does the 2026 NWSL playoff format work?
Each of the 16 teams plays a 30-game regular season, with 15 matches at home and 15 away. The top eight qualify for a single-elimination bracket: lose, and the team is out. There are no byes in the opening round; the league’s 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations say, “At the conclusion of the Regular Season the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs, with all playoff teams playing in the opening round.” NWSL 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations
What are the NWSL playoff matchups?
Quarterfinal opponents are determined by regular-season seed. The bracket’s semifinal paths are fixed, so the quarterfinal results—not a new draw—determine who meets next.

What the seed changes
A higher seed faces a lower-seeded opponent in the quarterfinals and may have a home match in the first two rounds, subject to venue availability. A strong seed also places a team on a particular side of the fixed bracket; it does not guarantee a championship match at home.

How are NWSL playoff seeds determined?
Teams earn three points for a win, one for a tie and zero for a loss. The team with more points ranks higher. If teams finish level on points, the league applies these criteria in order:
- Goal differential.
- Most total wins.
- Most goals scored.
- Head-to-head points accumulated.
- Most goals scored head-to-head.
- Fewest accumulated disciplinary points.
- A coin flip if two teams remain tied, or drawing of lots if three or more remain tied.
The criteria are sequential: once one separates the tied teams, later steps are unnecessary for ordering them. For example, if teams remain tied after goal differential, compare total wins next.

How disciplinary points count
At the sixth step, fewer disciplinary points ranks a team higher. The rules assign one point for a yellow card, three for an indirect red resulting from two yellows, four for a direct red, and five for a yellow card plus a direct red. Only one of these totals applies to a player in a single game.
What happens if an NWSL playoff game is tied?
If the score is level after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute extra-time periods in full. If they are still tied after extra time, a penalty shoot-out determines the winner. The league’s 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations

Who hosts NWSL playoff games?
The higher seed hosts quarterfinal and semifinal matches unless venue availability prevents it; if it does, the lower seed may host. The 2026 rules cited here do not establish that the higher seed hosts the championship, so the hosting advantage should not be assumed to extend to that match.

The league’s 2026 season announcement set the quarterfinal window for November 6–8, the semifinals for November 13–15, and the championship for November 21. These are announced 2026 dates, not permanent rules; check the NWSL 2026 schedule announcement for schedule details.
