Intel’s D1D is one building in an Oregon network of nine connected facilities, not a stand-alone factory. Intel says D1D and the separate D1X building together cover an area a little larger than 12 U.S. football fields. Inside the wider D1 factory system, automated vehicles carry wafer pods between buildings and tools; in the cleanroom, those tools depend on utilities delivered from below.
Where D1D fits in Intel’s Oregon campus
Intel describes an Oregon “wafer superhighway” linking nine buildings, including D1D and D1X. The company’s press kit puts D1D and D1X together at a little larger than 12 U.S. football fields. That is a combined-area comparison, not a measurement of D1D alone. Intel’s Global Manufacturing press kit also makes clear that the two factories are distinct buildings.
That distinction matters when interpreting announcements about the campus. For example, Intel’s 2022 announcement says D1X Mod3 added 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space; that expansion was at D1X, not D1D. Intel’s 2022 announcement does not establish D1D’s own cleanroom area.
How wafers move through the fab
Automated transport carries wafer pods
Intel says the automated material-handling system for its D1 factory has more than 27 miles of multilevel thoroughfares and 1,700 autonomous vehicles. These are figures for the D1 factory system, not a D1D-only vehicle count or a map of routes within that building. Intel’s AMHS leader Mutaz Haddadin describes the system as the fab’s “heartbeat and blood flow.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FOUPs protect and carry batches of wafers
A FOUP—a front-opening unified pod—can carry up to 25 wafers, according to Intel. The pods travel through the fab as manufacturing steps are completed; Intel says a wafer’s fabrication journey takes weeks. The company’s description gives a sense of the scale and duration of the work, but does not specify a single fixed route or timetable for every wafer.
What the cleanroom and its support systems involve
Intel’s general virtual fab tour describes a cleanroom as a reconfigurable, “ballroom style” environment for manufacturing equipment. The tour explains that tools receive electricity, ultrapure water, gases and chemicals from infrastructure routed through the subfab beneath them. That provides a useful picture of Intel’s fab model, but it should not be read as a verified floor plan or utility layout for D1D specifically. Intel Virtual Museum’s cleanroom tour explains the general arrangement.

The view of a fab is therefore not just rows of machines. It also includes the transport network above or around production areas and the extensive service infrastructure needed to supply tools. The public descriptions establish that these systems are integral to Intel’s manufacturing environment; they do not document every part of D1D’s current configuration.
Keep D1D and D1X announcements separate
Some of the most striking Oregon fab milestones belong specifically to D1X. Intel’s April 18, 2024 announcement said its 165-ton High NA EUV lithography tool at D1X had completed installation and calibration had started. That is the status Intel reported at that time, not confirmation of the tool’s present status or evidence that it is in D1D. Intel Foundry’s 2024 announcement identifies D1X as the location.

Likewise, Intel’s 2018 account of D1X describes a daily 8:20 a.m. team huddle on tool status, parts availability, forecasts and expert support, and characterizes that fab as operating 24/7/365. It is a historical example from D1X—not a current operating schedule or a documented D1D practice. Intel Investor Relations’ 2018 account supplies that snapshot.

Intel’s public material supports a clear overview: D1D is part of a nine-building Oregon transport network; the D1 factory system uses extensive automated handling; and Intel’s general fab tour explains how cleanroom tools rely on subfab utilities. But the cited sources do not provide a current, detailed division of process-development or production tasks between D1D and D1X, nor a D1D-specific map of equipment and utilities.
