In the 2026 NWSL season, eight of 16 teams qualify for the playoffs. A team clinches when no possible combination of remaining regular-season results can push it below eighth place after the league’s tiebreakers are applied. Wins count for three points, draws for one, and final table position determines playoff seeding.
How do NWSL teams qualify for the playoffs?
Each of the 16 clubs is scheduled to play 30 regular-season matches, split between 15 home and 15 away. At the end of the season, the top eight teams in the standings qualify for the knockout playoffs. The league’s 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations state that all eight playoff teams play in the opening round.
The standings award three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. A team’s points total is the starting point for the playoff race, but tiebreakers can decide places when clubs finish level.
What does it mean to clinch a playoff spot?
A team has mathematically clinched when no set of results in the remaining matches can leave it outside the top eight under the official standings rules. In other words, its place is secure even in the least favorable remaining scenario. Being inside the top eight today is not enough on its own; teams below can still catch up, and tied points may be resolved by tiebreakers.

To check a team’s status, compare its points and games remaining with the clubs around eighth, then account for every remaining fixture that could affect those teams. The basic ceiling for a club is its current points plus three points for each remaining match. If that ceiling is too low to reach the qualifying positions, it is eliminated. If a club can still tie a rival near the cutoff, points alone do not settle the question: the tiebreak order must be applied.
How to assess a live playoff scenario
- Start with the current table. Record points, games played and goal difference for teams around the eighth-place line.
- Calculate maximum possible points. Add three points for every remaining match to each club’s current total.
- Check the remaining fixtures. Include head-to-head matches and other results that could change the cutoff teams’ totals.
- Apply tiebreakers if teams can finish level. A points tie may still put one team above another.
- Call a clinch or elimination only after testing all possible outcomes. A team clinches if every remaining scenario leaves it in the top eight; it is eliminated if none can put it there.

- Goal difference
- Most total wins
- Most goals scored
- Head-to-head points
- Head-to-head goals scored
- Fewest disciplinary points
- A coin flip for two tied teams, or drawing lots for three or more
Goal difference is the first tiebreaker, so a team’s margin of victory and defeat can matter in addition to its points. If clubs remain level on that measure, the league proceeds through the remaining criteria in sequence; later criteria matter only if earlier ones do not separate the teams.

The higher seed hosts quarterfinals and semifinals unless venue availability prevents it; in that case, the lower seed may host. This is why teams that have already clinched may still be playing for a better seed, particularly a top-four position.
A playoff match tied after 90 minutes goes to two full 15-minute extra-time periods. If the score remains level, the winner is decided by a penalty shoot-out.

When does the 2026 regular season end?
The league’s July 2, 2025 schedule-footprint announcement said the final weekend of the 2026 regular season would be Decision Day, followed by the playoff window. Match dates can change, so consult the current official NWSL schedule for exact dates rather than relying on an earlier announcement.

Club-by-club status changes as matches are played and cannot be determined from the rules alone. Check the official NWSL standings alongside the remaining schedule, and verify the points, goal difference and other relevant tiebreak figures before treating a team as clinched or eliminated.
