The clearest difference is that Hangzhou’s 2022 Asian Games, held in 2023, awarded men’s and women’s team medals as well as individual medals; the Tokyo 2020 Olympic materials describe individual competitions. Team totals at Hangzhou were calculated from players’ scores each day.
How the individual golf competition works
The basic individual format is similar in the cited editions: players compete over four rounds of stroke play, normally 18 holes per round for 72 holes in total. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic ticketing guide specifies four 18-hole rounds. The Hangzhou organizer’s schedule lists four rounds of Asian Games golf from September 28 through October 1, 2023, at West Lake International Golf Course.
Stroke play means each player’s score is the total number of strokes taken over the rounds; the lowest total wins. The available event materials do not establish a fundamentally different golf rulebook for the Asian Games. The distinctions here are principally in the medal program and team scoring, not a different basic game.
Medals: individual events at Tokyo, team events at Hangzhou
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic regulations and guide cited here describe men’s and women’s individual competitions. Hangzhou’s Asian Games program included four golf medal events: men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, and women’s team. Its organizer said athletes were competing for four golf gold medals.
#1 Best Overall
- The Strata 12-Piece Men's is designed to give you maximum performance right out of the box for more confidence from tee-to-green. The lightweight 460cc forged driver, fairway wood, hybrid, irons and putter make up a set that provides a great combination of distance, forgiveness and control, and is very easy to hit.
So, for the Hangzhou edition, Asian Games golf was not team-only: competitors had individual results and the Games also awarded team medals. Do not assume that every future edition will use the same events without checking its regulations.
How Hangzhou’s team medals were scored
At Hangzhou, teams had different roster sizes for men and women, and not every score counted toward the daily team total:
Rank #2
- The Strata Plus Set is a full set with a great combination of distance and forgiveness right out of the box. Set includes: Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Hybrid, 6 - 9 Iron, PW & SW, Putter, Stand Bag, and 3 Head covers
- Woods: Driver has a 460cc club head with a larger sweet spot and graphite shaft for more distance off the tee. The 3 Wood promotes faster swing speeds and long shots
- Hybrid: 5 Hybrid is designed for versatility and forgiveness on shots where you would usually hit a difficult long iron
- Irons/Wedges: 6 to 9 irons, pitching wedge & sand wedge have perimeter weighting and progressive sole width technology for improved control
- Putter: Mallet putter with alignment to help give you incredible accuracy
- Men: four players per team; the best three scores counted each day.
- Women: three players per team; the best two scores counted each day.
Those daily counted scores were combined to determine the team result. This added a team competition alongside the individual stroke-play standings. These roster and scoring details are specific to Hangzhou 2022, held in 2023, and should not be treated as a permanent Asian Games rule.
Field size and edition dates matter
The International Golf Federation’s Tokyo 2020 regulations set a maximum quota of 60 men and 60 women, or 120 golfers in total. That figure is the quota for that Olympic edition, not a universal limit for Olympic golf.

The Asian Games edition is commonly called Hangzhou 2022, but it took place in 2023. The organizer scheduled golf at West Lake International Golf Course from September 28 to October 1, 2023. Comparing named editions matters: the Tokyo quota and Hangzhou team format are historical, edition-specific details, not guarantees about later Games.

Golf has appeared at both multi-sport events for decades. The Hangzhou organizing committee says golf first appeared at the Olympics in 1900 and at the Asian Games in 1982. That shared history does not mean their event programs are identical; the practical difference illustrated by the cited editions is Hangzhou’s addition of team medals to its individual competitions.
