Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A “quick” meeting can interrupt a much longer stretch of development than its calendar length suggests. In his October 15, 2025, InfoWorld opinion article, “Zoom dooms the developer’s afternoon,” Nick Hodges argues that easy-to-schedule video calls can make those interruptions more likely—but that team norms and scheduling choices, not Zoom itself, are the underlying issue.
Why a short meeting can disrupt a long work block
Software development often calls for sustained concentration. A meeting in the middle of a planned work period divides that time into separate pieces: the developer must stop, attend, and then return to the task. Hodges’s point is that the interruption’s impact need not match the meeting’s duration. He illustrates it with the line, “A single ‘quick 15 minute meeting’ in the middle of the afternoon can blow away a whole afternoon for a software developer.” That is the author’s opinion, not a measured productivity statistic.
The practical implication is not that every meeting is wasteful. It is that calendar time is not always interchangeable: a short call placed inside a focus block may cost more than the minutes shown on the invitation.
Why makers and managers can experience calendars differently
Hodges uses Paul Graham’s “Maker’s Schedule, Manager’s Schedule” to frame a familiar tension. A developer doing concentrated work may prefer larger, uninterrupted stretches; a manager coordinating people may find it useful to schedule conversations throughout the day. Those preferences can collide when a meeting that is convenient for one person breaks another person’s work into fragments.

This framing is a way to understand competing scheduling needs, not a claim that every developer or manager works the same way. Teams can reduce the conflict by making focus time visible and treating it as a real scheduling constraint rather than unused calendar space.
What to change before blaming the meeting tool
Video software makes it easier to convene people, but convenience alone does not decide when a meeting is called, who must attend, or whether a live conversation is needed. Hodges places responsibility on team culture and management choices. A useful meeting norm therefore focuses on the decision to interrupt, not on treating Zoom as inherently harmful.

- Check whether everyone invited is needed. Keep the discussion to people whose input or decision is necessary.
- Choose the least disruptive format. If an exchange does not require a live conversation, use an asynchronous channel such as Slack, which Hodges names as one possible option.
- Make focus periods explicit. A calendar block gives colleagues a visible signal that the time is reserved for concentrated work.
These are scheduling practices, not a tested comparison of Zoom, Slack, or other collaboration products. Hodges does not present evidence that one tool objectively improves productivity.
How to protect uninterrupted development time
- Tell your team when you need focus. Explain that uninterrupted blocks help you do development work, and agree how colleagues should handle requests during them.
- Block focus periods on your calendar. Set aside time for concentrated work so others can see when you are unavailable for routine meetings.
- Group necessary meetings near the beginning or end of the day. Hodges recommends these timings as a way to leave larger stretches available for work.
- Consider a no-meeting period. A shared protected window can reduce interruptions across the team, provided it fits the team’s responsibilities.
- Use asynchronous communication when a meeting is unnecessary. Send the information or question in a channel such as Slack when immediate back-and-forth is not required.
Choose the right response to a meeting request
When an invitation lands in the middle of a focus block, assess the request before accepting or declining it. The goal is to preserve concentration where possible while keeping necessary coordination workable.

| Question | If the answer points to a live meeting | If it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Is a real-time discussion needed? | Keep the meeting and schedule it at a less disruptive time where possible. | Handle the exchange asynchronously. |
| Does every invitee need to participate? | Invite the people needed for the discussion or decision. | Leave out people who do not need to attend and send them the relevant outcome. |
| Can the meeting move outside a focus block? | Place it near the beginning or end of the day if that works for participants. | Keep the protected block and use another time or format. |
| Can the team protect a shared period? | Set a no-meeting period that accommodates the team’s work. | Use individual calendar blocks and agree on how urgent requests are handled. |
This decision framework applies the article’s suggestions; it is not a set of experimentally ranked options. The right choice depends on whether synchronous discussion is genuinely needed and how the team coordinates its work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The takeaway for developers and engineering managers
Protecting focus is a team scheduling problem, not a reason to condemn Zoom. Developers can make uninterrupted time visible, while managers and colleagues can consider timing, attendance, and asynchronous alternatives before sending an invitation. Hodges’s article offers an opinion about the cost of fragmented afternoons, not a quantified estimate of lost productivity.
