StarCraft AI bots do not all learn in the same way. A bot first needs an interface to observe the game and issue actions; it can then use scouting evidence to estimate an opponent’s plan, choose a build through rules or search, and adapt using whatever strategic system its developers implemented. Some bots rely on hand-authored logic, while research systems have learned strategic decisions from replays or used deep reinforcement learning in selected modules.
How does a StarCraft bot observe and act?
A bot operates in a repeated loop: it reads the game state available through its interface, decides what that state suggests, selects economic or production actions, and issues commands to units. Its decisions are limited by what the interface exposes and by the demands of real-time play.
For StarCraft: Brood War, BWAPI is a free, open-source C++ framework for interacting with the game. Its README describes a framework that lets bots read relevant game state, control individual units, and analyze replays frame by frame for trends, build orders, and common strategies. BWAPI supplies an interface—not a universal learning algorithm, nor a guarantee that a bot will adapt effectively.
How do StarCraft AI bots scout?
Scouting gives a bot evidence about the opponent. For example, the bot may observe a structure or unit and use that information to estimate what the opponent is trying to do. The observation is not the same as the conclusion: seeing a particular building is a fact about the game state, while the opponent’s intended strategy remains an inference.

Scouting becomes strategically useful when the bot turns that evidence into a changed prediction or decision. Replay-based strategy-prediction research connects strategy prediction, scouting, and build-order adaptation, but the studied approaches differ. It would be inaccurate to assume every bot scouts intelligently, infers intent reliably, or learns online during a match.
How do bots choose a build order?
A build order is a sequence of production and economic actions. A planner must account for prerequisites, available resources, timing, and its strategic objective. Some bots use explicit rules; others search among possible sequences or use learned policies.
Search and simulation
UAlbertaBot is an open-source Protoss bot built with BWAPI. Its project wiki describes BOSS, the StarCraft Build Order Search System, as a package UAlbertaBot uses to search and simulate build orders. This illustrates how a bot can seek a feasible production sequence without requiring each action to be the output of a learned neural network.

UAlbertaBot also documents a combat simulator among its systems. When a bot models combat outcomes, the expected value of a build can depend on what it anticipates facing. That is one example of an architecture, not a template followed by all StarCraft bots.

Some do, but replay use can mean different things. A bot may analyze replays to extract trends or common build orders, or researchers may train a system on replay data and then integrate it into a bot. Neither approach implies that every bot updates its strategy continuously while playing.
Research on macromanagement has trained strategic decisions from game replays and integrated a learned system into UAlbertaBot. Separate StarCraft II research describes a modular architecture that applies deep reinforcement learning to selected modules. These are distinct approaches in distinct settings; Brood War and StarCraft II environments should not be treated as interchangeable.

What does “adapt” mean for a bot?
Adaptation can happen at different stages. Developers can encode rules that respond to observed events; a search-based planner can select a different build when conditions or goals change; or a learned system can be trained outside a match using replay data or reinforcement learning. Whether a particular bot changes its plan during a match depends on its implementation.
The key distinction is between the evidence a bot receives and the decision mechanism it uses. Scouting supplies observations; inference estimates the opponent’s likely strategy; planning or a learned policy determines whether to change production, tactics, or both. Those components can be combined, but they are not automatically present just because a bot uses BWAPI or another game interface.

How should bot performance claims be read?
A reported result belongs to its evaluation setup, not to StarCraft AI in general. The authors of “Macro action selection with deep reinforcement learning in StarCraft” reported that LastOrder achieved an 83% win rate against the AIIDE 2017 StarCraft bot set and outperformed 26 of 28 entrants. That is a result against that historical opponent set under the paper’s evaluation conditions—not a current tournament ranking or a guarantee of performance against other opponents.
