You can use tags to find and filter notes, apply tags to several notes at once, or build a Smart Folder that collects notes matching selected criteria.
How to add a tag to a note
Tags work in Notes on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and later. Open a note and type a hash sign followed by a continuous tag name anywhere in the note, including its title. Add a space or press Return; the text changes color to show that Notes has recognized the tag. Apple’s instructions are in its iPhone and iPad tagging guide.
- Open Notes and choose or create a note.
- Type
#and a tag name, such as#gardeningor#gardening-supplies. - Type a space or press Return to activate the tag.
A tag name cannot contain spaces as a single tag. Hyphens, numbers, and underscores are allowed, so names such as #trip_2026 are valid. If you type the hash-prefixed word but it does not become a tag, check Settings > Apps > Notes and make sure Auto Convert to Tag is enabled. Apple also recommends updating iOS or iPadOS to the latest version.
How to find notes by tag
In Notes, scroll below the folder list to the Tags browser. Tap All Tags to see notes that have tags, or choose a specific tag to see notes carrying it.

You can select more than one tag to narrow the results. Depending on the filter choice, Notes can show notes containing all selected tags or notes containing any selected tag. On iPad, Apple also documents excluding a tag: tap the selected tag until its name is crossed out. See Apple’s iPad guide to tags and Smart Folders for that iPad filter behavior.
How to tag several notes at once
To add tags to multiple existing notes, open the folder containing them, then:

- Tap More in the note list and choose Select Notes.
- Select the notes you want to tag.
- Tap Tags, choose the tags to apply, and confirm.
Rename or delete a tag
In the Tags browser, touch and hold the tag, then choose Rename Tag or Delete Tag. The browser lists tags that are still used in notes, so a tag disappears from the browser when no notes use it.
When to use a Smart Folder
A regular tag is a label you can apply across notes and search from the Tags browser. A Smart Folder is useful when you want a saved view of notes matching filters such as tags, creation date, or last-edited date. It gathers matching notes without moving them out of their original folders.

You can create a Smart Folder by creating a folder and choosing Make Into Smart Folder, then adding filters. Apple also allows creating one from a tag view. The steps and supported filters are described in Apple’s Notes tagging guide.
Converting an existing folder is different
Converting a regular folder to a Smart Folder moves its notes into the Notes folder and tags them with the Smart Folder’s name. This conversion cannot be undone; to stop using the Smart Folder, delete it. Apple says a shared folder, a folder with a subfolder, or a folder containing locked notes cannot be converted. Limits and compatibility to know
- Locked notes: A tagged note cannot be locked, and a locked note cannot receive a tag.
- Older Apple software: Tags created with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or later appear on other Apple devices running iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, or later. On older software, tags may appear as plain text; do not assume those systems support tag browsing.
- Shared notes: Apple says recipients using the listed older-compatible versions can see the tag and find it in their Tags browser. People using older software may see the tag as plain text.
Handwrite a tag on iPad
If you use Apple Pencil to write in a note, you can sketch a hash sign and tag name. Tap the underlined handwritten tag and choose Convert to tag. Typing the tag is also sufficient; Apple’s cited tagging directions do not specify a Pencil model.
