What Google announced
Google Labs announced Jules Tools and an early look at the Jules API on October 2, 2025. Kathy Korevec, Google Labs’ Director of Product Management, described Jules Tools as “our new, lightweight command-line interface” and said the API would let developers “integrate Jules directly into your systems.” Google’s announcement presents Jules as an AI coding agent intended to assist with tasks such as generating code, fixing bugs, writing tests, and improving performance. Those are intended task areas, not guarantees of results.

What you can do with the Jules CLI
The CLI brings session and task controls into a terminal. Google’s changelog documents commands to create remote tasks and list active sessions, plus ways to monitor work and retrieve a work-in-progress patch for local application. A local patch gives you a chance to inspect or test proposed changes before waiting for a GitHub commit; it does not itself establish that the code is correct.
The CLI can also fit into shell-based workflows, including those that use tools such as gh, jq, or cat. For users who prefer an interactive interface, the documentation describes a terminal UI for creating and managing tasks.

To create a task, it shows
jules remote new --repo torvalds/linux --session "write unit tests". This is Google’s documentation example, not a claim that the command has been independently tested here.
What the Jules API is for
The API is intended for developers who want software to interact with Jules instead of managing each task manually in a terminal. Google’s examples include Slack ChatOps, triggering bug fixes or feature implementation from project-management tools such as Linear or Jira, and integrating with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions. These are integration examples, not evidence of guaranteed automation outcomes.

The Google for Developers API overview describes a model built around sources, sessions, and activities. A session groups interactions with Jules, which can include generating a plan, receiving a message, or reporting progress. The quickstart’s example creates a session with a prompt and source context.
API setup and experimental status
Google’s API quickstart says to create an API key from the Jules web app’s Settings page. It also states that a user can have at most three keys at a time. The same documentation explicitly labels the REST API alpha and experimental and warns that its specifications, API keys, and definitions may change as it moves toward stabilization. That makes it a fit for exploratory integration work, not an interface to assume is stable.
