What did the 2020 makeover change?
In its October 21, 2020 announcement for Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20241, Microsoft included Snip & Sketch among apps receiving theme-aware splash screens. The splash screen is the brief screen shown while an app opens; the announcement did not describe new capture controls or a complete app redesign. Microsoft said the change was initially rolling out to a subset of Dev Channel Insiders, so that announcement alone does not establish when—or whether—the same change reached every retail Windows 10 installation. The modern snipping experience started earlier
Microsoft had described a broader change in May 2018. In Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17661, Screen Sketch became an app, and pressing Win+Shift+S opened a toolbar for rectangular, freeform, or full-screen captures. A notification then let users open the snip in the app to annotate and share it. How to take a screenshot in Windows 10
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11. On Windows 10, use the built-in capture shortcut to select an area, or open Snipping Tool to choose a capture mode. The exact options presented can depend on the installed version.

- Open the capture toolbar: press Windows key + Shift + S.
- Choose a snip: select a rectangular area, freeform area, window, or full screen when that option is available.
- Capture the screen: make the selection or click the window; a full-screen snip captures the display.
- Annotate or save: open the capture notification or Snipping Tool to mark up the image and save or share it.
For a delayed capture or other controls, open Snipping Tool and check which options your Windows installation provides. Microsoft documents the modes and steps in its Snipping Tool support guide.
Which features apply to Windows 10?
The current support guide includes Windows 10 and Windows 11 directions, but it also identifies some features as specific to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft marks Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker with that restriction; they should not be presented as Windows 10 features. The guide also covers video snips and text actions, but availability should be checked against its stated Windows version and device requirements rather than inferred from the 2020 Insider announcement.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle page. That lifecycle milestone is separate from Snip & Sketch’s feature history. Microsoft notes that LTSC releases follow their own edition-specific lifecycles, so the Home and Pro date should not be generalized to every Windows 10 edition.
