List decoding changes a decoder’s promise: instead of choosing one answer, it returns a bounded set of candidates. They can overlap when a QEC decoder keeps several possible errors, but “quantum list decoding” also names other, distinct decoding problems. The input model matters before comparing their guarantees.
What quantum error correction does
A quantum code stores logical information in a code space. When physical errors affect the encoded state, a decoder uses information about those errors to select a recovery intended to restore the logical state. In common code constructions, syndrome measurements provide information about the error without requiring the decoder to identify every detail of the physical error pattern.
For CSS codes, the decoding task separates into classical-style problems for bit-flip errors and phase errors. The decoder’s effectiveness depends on the code and the assumed noise model, as well as on how syndrome extraction itself is treated. The Error Correction Zoo distinguishes ideal syndrome assumptions from phenomenological and circuit-level noise models.
What list decoding changes
List decoding is an output rule, not by itself a complete error-protection scheme. Where unique decoding requires one answer, list decoding permits a bounded list of plausible candidates. A later step, additional information, or verification may be needed to select among them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In a QEC-related formulation, the candidates can be error cosets consistent with a syndrome. Quantum-code degeneracy matters here: different physical error patterns can have the same logical effect, so ambiguity about the physical pattern does not necessarily mean ambiguity about the encoded information.
How the techniques compare
| Question | Quantum error correction | List decoding |
|---|---|---|
| Main aim | Protect and recover logical quantum information. | Return candidates when requiring one unique answer is too restrictive. |
| Typical input | An encoded state and error information, such as a syndrome. | A received word, a quantumly corrupted codeword, or a syndrome, depending on the formulation. |
| Output | A recovery operation or an equivalent logical recovery. | A bounded list of candidate messages, errors, or cosets. |
| Meaning of ambiguity | Different physical errors may be logically equivalent because of code degeneracy. | Several candidates are deliberately retained for later selection or verification. |
| Main caution | Performance depends on the code, noise model, and syndrome extraction. | The phrase covers multiple tasks; its input and guarantee must be specified. |
These are useful conceptual distinctions, not a one-to-one mapping between every algorithm or guarantee. QEC describes the protection goal; list decoding describes a more permissive decoder output.

Why “quantum list decoding” can mean different problems
List decoding within quantum error correction
In this setting, a decoder for a quantum code may return a short list of possible errors or error cosets compatible with the available syndrome information, rather than committing to a unique correction. This is the overlap between QEC and list decoding.
Classical codes accessed through a quantumly corrupted codeword
Yamakami’s 2006 paper studies a different setup: the code is a classical block code, but the decoder accesses a quantumly corrupted codeword. It returns a short list of messages whose codewords have high “presence” in that quantum object. The paper distinguishes this model from the conventional sender–receiver noisy-channel model. See Yamakami’s paper.

Quantum channel measurement problems
Other formulations involve measurements on classical–quantum channels that return lists of possible messages. They are not interchangeable with either decoding errors in a physical quantum code or decoding a classical codeword accessed as a quantum object. Secondary overviews note these distinct formulations; the exact model needs to be named before interpreting a claimed result.

An accepted Physical Review A paper, “Quantum error correction in adversarial regimes,” by Rahul Arvind, Nikhil Bansal, Dax Enshan Koh, Tobias Haug, and Kishor Bharti, is labeled accepted on 4 August 2026 on its APS page. Its abstract says standard QEC in the adversarial setting “can only correct up to half the code distance and must output a unique answer,” and presents list decoding as a way to allow a short list of possible errors.

The authors report generalized Knill–Laflamme conditions and a protocol based on pseudorandom unitaries, with security claims against quantum polynomial-time adversaries. These are claims of the accepted paper, not evidence of a hardware demonstration or a settled performance guarantee for quantum devices. The authors describe their response to the paper’s stated questions—what codes support list decoding and whether a secure scheme against computationally bounded adversaries can be designed—with the sentence: “In this work, we answer both.”

How to read a claim about quantum list decoding
- Identify the object being decoded. Is it an error affecting a physical quantum code, a classical codeword represented by a quantumly corrupted object, or a message sent through a classical–quantum channel?
- Check what the list contains. Candidates may be messages, physical errors, or error cosets; those outputs do not carry the same interpretation.
- Read the guarantee in context. Note the code, noise or adversary model, syndrome assumptions, and whether the result is theoretical or demonstrated in hardware.
- Ask how a candidate is ultimately selected. A bounded list relaxes the decoder’s immediate output requirement; by itself it does not specify which candidate is correct.
