Mow to suit your grass and conditions, and remove no more than one-third of each blade in a single pass. That rule—not a fixed weekly schedule—sets the pace: a lawn kept at 3 inches should be cut before it grows much beyond about 4½ inches. Choose a suitable height for your grass, avoid mowing wet or heat- or drought-stressed turf, and raise the mower if the lawn has grown too tall.
1. Choose a cutting height for your grass
There is no single correct mowing height for every lawn. Grass species, shade, climate, cultivar, and how the lawn is used all matter. The ranges below are examples from Illinois Extension, not guarantees for every lawn.
| Grass species | Example mowing height |
|---|---|
| Bermudagrass | 1–2 inches |
| Buffalograss | 1½–3 inches |
| Zoysiagrass | 1–3 inches |
| Kentucky bluegrass | 2–3 inches |
| Perennial ryegrass | 2–3 inches |
| Creeping red fescue | 1½–2 inches |
| Tall fescue | 2½–3½ inches |
Illinois Extension’s lawn-care guidance provides these species examples. Regional recommendations can differ: Purdue advises keeping cool-season lawn grasses in Indiana and Illinois at least 3 inches high. Do not apply that regional advice to every grass or location. In shade, Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends keeping turf toward the high end of the suitable range so it retains more leaf area (Virginia Cooperative Extension).
If you do not know your grass type, identify it or ask a local extension service before setting a precise height. Check the mower on a flat surface if its markings are unclear; consult the owner’s manual. Before checking or adjusting blade height, Idaho Extension advises turning the mower off and disconnecting the spark plug (University of Idaho Extension).

2. Use the one-third rule to decide when to mow
At each mowing, remove no more than one-third of the leaf blade. This limits abrupt cutting and gives you a practical trigger that adjusts to growth rather than relying on a fixed calendar interval.
For example, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach illustrates the rule with a lawn maintained at 3 inches: mow when the grass reaches about 4½ inches. If you maintain grass shorter, it reaches the one-third threshold sooner, so you need to mow more often—not less often. Iowa State’s frequency examples assume growth of 0.2 inches per day; that is an assumption used for the example table, not a universal growth rate (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, 2024).

- POWERFUL PERFORMANCE: Tackle your yard with 3,300 RPM of power and a 14-inch cutting width
- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: No gas or batteries needed to power the mower
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR CUT: Effortlessly change the height of your cut with 5 cutting positions varying between 1.4-inches and 3-inches
- MAX MANEUVERABILITY: Features 7.75-inch rear wheels for easy navigation around the lawn
- 7-GALLON COLLECTION BAG: Neatly stores grass clippings for a tidier lawn
Actual growth changes with species, season, weather, irrigation, fertility, and other conditions. Check the lawn’s height and growth instead of treating a published number of days as a schedule for every yard.
3. Mow in suitable conditions, with a sharp blade
Wait until the grass is dry. Wet turf is difficult to cut cleanly, and Maryland and Illinois Extension advise against mowing it. Also wait when growth has paused because of drought or hot weather; Maryland Extension cautions against mowing turf under that stress (Maryland Extension; Illinois Extension).

- EXCEEDS THE POWER OF GAS: EGO's cordless electric mower delivers up to 7.0 ft-lbs of cutting torque for performance that exceeds gas-powered mowers.
- UP TO 60 MINUTES OF RUNTIME: The EGO electric lawn mower operates for up to 60 minutes on a single charge with the included 56V 7.5Ah battery.
- TOUCH DRIVE SELF-PROPELLED TECHNOLOGY: The EGO 800 Series lawn mower is a self propelled electric lawn mower. Use the pressure of your palm to engage the self-propel system, and control the variable speed with a dial positioned at your fingertips.
- SELECT CUT MULTI-BLADE CUTTING SYSTEM: Customize your cut with interchangeable lower blades; the battery powered mower includes mulching, high-lift bagging, and extended runtime lower blades, plus an upper blade.
- MOW AT YOUR PACE: The EGO self propelled lawn mower lets you adjust your speed between 0.9 and 3.1 miles per hour.
A sharp blade helps make a clean cut. Maryland Extension recommends sharpening or replacing the blade at the start of the mowing season and offers about 10 cumulative hours of mower use as a rule of thumb for sharpening—not a fixed interval that fits every blade or mower (Maryland Extension).
4. Change the mowing direction when it helps
Alternate direction or pattern from one mowing to another if the same wheel tracks are getting worn or the grass shows visible grain. Arkansas Extension says varying the pattern can reduce wear, compaction, scalping, and grain (Arkansas Extension).

- WIDER MORE EVEN CUTTING: The 17-inch cutting deck and 6 height settings from 1 to 3 inches (25–75 mm) help this cordless lawn mower deliver a cleaner, more even finish across small and medium lawns.
- DUAL BATTERY EXTENDED RUNTIME: Powered by two 20V 4.0Ah batteries, this walk behind lawn mower runs for up to 40 minutes and covers up to 5,380 sq. ft. (500 m²) per charge under test conditions.
- LARGE CAPACITY GRASS COLLECTION: The 50L collection bag holds more clippings between emptying cycles, while regular cleaning around the inlet and blade area helps this lawn mower maintain reliable grass collection.
- HIGH OUTPUT BRUSHLESS POWER: The 3000 RPM brushless motor delivers up to 1200W max output, helping this electric battery powered lawn mower maintain steady blade speed through routine residential grass.
- SIMPLE START PORTABLE DESIGN: One-button activation and a pull-bar start make operation straightforward, while the 14 kg lightweight body makes this cordless lawn mower easier to carry, position, and store.
This is useful practice, not an absolute requirement for every yard. Illinois Extension notes that repeating a direction may not be a problem on taller turf typical of home lawns. Prioritize changing direction where repeated traffic or visible grain is an issue.

Do not scalp an overgrown lawn to its final height in one pass. Set the mower higher for the first cut so that you remove no more than about one-third of the blade, then reduce the height over later mowings until you reach the appropriate range. Virginia Extension describes lowering the height every 2–3 days in its suggested approach; treat that interval as context-specific guidance, not a universal schedule (Virginia Cooperative Extension). Arkansas Extension likewise advises raising the mower when behind and reducing the height gradually in subsequent weeks (Arkansas Extension).

6. Leave clippings when they disperse through the lawn
On most lawns, leave clippings when they fall back through the canopy rather than forming piles. Florida IFAS explains that clippings can recycle nutrients and organic matter; Illinois Extension says collection is unnecessary when you mow as needed and follow the one-third rule (Florida IFAS; Illinois Extension).
Large clumps are a sign to adjust mowing timing or height: the grass may have grown too long, or conditions may be too wet. Avoid turning routine bagging into the default response to a cut made under poor conditions.
