Neither a laptop webcam nor an external webcam is automatically better for video calls. The built-in camera is convenient and travels with your laptop; an external model is useful when its placement or a specific feature fixes a problem your built-in camera has. Compare the cameras in your actual setup—not just their resolution labels.
What matters most in a video-call camera?
Start with the image and framing you get in your usual seat, room and meeting app. Camera quality depends on more than resolution: lighting, sensor quality, focus, field of view, camera placement and the app’s output settings all affect what other callers see. Lenovo’s webcam guidance discusses these selection factors.
Placement and eye line
A laptop camera sits in the screen bezel, so its position changes when you move or tilt the display. With an external monitor, the laptop camera may be off to one side or below your eye line. An external webcam can be mounted on the monitor or elsewhere to better suit your seating position—but only if the mount and your screen arrangement produce a useful angle. Dell’s comparison of laptop and external webcams discusses placement and framing.
Lighting, focus and field of view
Good lighting on your face can matter more than upgrading a camera. Focus and field of view also change the result: autofocus may help when your distance from the camera varies, while a narrower view can keep more of your surroundings out of frame. External models differ in these features, and some built-in cameras may already be sufficient for your needs.

Built-in vs. external: practical trade-offs
| Consideration | Built-in laptop webcam | External webcam |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience and portability | Already attached, with no extra device or cable. Useful when you move between locations. | Adds a device, cable and setup; less convenient to pack and reconnect. |
| Position and eye line | Fixed to the laptop screen; its angle depends on screen placement. | Can be mounted separately to suit a monitor and seating position. |
| Image and controls | Depends on the specific laptop camera, lighting and meeting-app settings. | Some models offer features such as autofocus, adjustable field of view or a privacy cover; check the individual specifications. |
| Connection and compatibility | Integrated with the laptop. | Check the available port, cable length, mount, meeting-app support and whether advanced controls need software. |
| Cost | No separate webcam purchase. | Requires buying a separate camera; the right value depends on whether it solves a real need. |
These are category-level trade-offs, not guarantees about every camera. Logitech’s discussion of webcam and laptop-camera controls describes options such as field of view, exposure and focus; as a manufacturer article, it is not an independent comparison test.
When is a laptop webcam good enough?
Keep using the built-in camera if it gives you a satisfactory image and angle in your usual lighting, and you value working without another device or cable. That is especially practical if you take calls from different places; Dell notes the convenience of an integrated camera for mobile and multi-location use in its camera comparison.

Before replacing it, check a few setup issues that can make an acceptable camera look worse:
- Put light in front of you, rather than relying on a bright window or lamp behind you.
- Adjust the screen or your seat so the camera is near your eye line.
- Confirm the intended camera is selected in the meeting app.
- Check the app’s camera and video-output settings; a camera’s maximum resolution does not by itself determine the resolution other callers receive.
When should you consider an external webcam?
Consider one when you can name a shortcoming it would address. Common reasons include a laptop camera that is badly positioned relative to an external monitor, a need for a different field of view, autofocus for a changing camera distance, or a physical privacy feature. These capabilities vary by model, so confirm that the webcam you choose actually includes the feature you need.

Does higher resolution mean a better webcam?
No. Resolution is one specification, not a guarantee of a better-looking call. Lighting, sensor performance, focus, framing and the meeting app’s output settings all contribute to the result. The C920e’s listed 1080p resolution, for example, does not establish that every external webcam beats every laptop camera or that a call will be delivered at 1080p.
Quick Recap
How to choose between them
- Assess your current setup. In your normal lighting and seating position, check whether the built-in camera gives you a useful angle and an image you are happy with.
- Fix simple setup problems first. Improve the light on your face, adjust the camera angle, select the correct camera in the meeting app and review its video settings.
- Name the problem an upgrade must solve. Examples include poor placement with an external monitor, a needed field of view, autofocus or a physical privacy cover.
- Verify the specific webcam. Check its documented features, port and cable, mount, meeting-app support and any software needed for controls.
- Compare the result with the extra setup. If the built-in camera already works for your calls, an external webcam may add cost and clutter without improving a meaningful part of your setup.
