“Lifetime” cloud storage is not a promise that a provider will operate forever, and it does not automatically mean your files are more private. The term depends on the provider’s contract: pCloud, for example, defines its Lifetime plan as lasting for the account owner’s lifetime or 99 years, whichever is shorter. iCloud+ is a recurring subscription. For both, the important questions are what the terms say about access and storage limits, who controls encryption keys, and whether you keep a separate copy of important files.

What happens to iCloud files if you stop paying?

iCloud+ is a recurring subscription, not a one-time purchase. Apple’s cited US iCloud terms say that if stored data exceeds the applicable storage limit, Apple may give 30 days’ notice and then delete the excess data. That is the rule stated in those US terms; terms and account conditions may vary by region and can change. Review the terms for your country and account rather than assuming the same process applies everywhere. Apple’s US iCloud terms

That quota rule is about storage capacity, not a blanket statement that every file is immediately deleted when a subscription ends. Check your current plan, how much storage you use, and the applicable account terms before making a change. Keep a separate copy of files you cannot afford to lose.

Does “lifetime” cloud storage really last forever?

No. “Lifetime” is a provider-specific contractual label, not a general guarantee that a company or service will exist forever. pCloud’s terms state: “A lifetime plan is in effect for the duration of the lifetime of the account owner or 99 years, whichever is shorter.” That is pCloud’s definition, not a rule for other providers. pCloud terms

Account policies can also differ by plan. pCloud says free accounts inactive for 12 months may be permanently deleted, while its Lifetime help page says Lifetime accounts have no inactivity clause. The free-account policy should not be treated as the policy for a paid Lifetime plan—or as evidence of another provider’s terms. pCloud Lifetime help

Before buying any lifetime plan, read the current terms for your country. Confirm the duration, termination rights, account requirements, and what happens if storage allowances or service terms change.

Can Apple see your iCloud files?

That depends partly on Apple’s data-protection setting and the type of data. Apple’s default, Standard Data Protection, encrypts iCloud data, but Apple retains keys for some categories and can assist with account and data recovery. Apple iCloud terms

Apple’s optional Advanced Data Protection (ADP) extends end-to-end encryption to additional categories, including iCloud Drive files, Photos, Notes, and backups. With end-to-end encryption, the protected data is designed so that only trusted devices can access its keys. ADP does not mean every piece of iCloud information is end-to-end encrypted: some metadata remains protected with standard encryption. The privacy and recovery trade-off with ADP

ADP gives users more control over keys for the additional protected categories, but it also shifts recovery responsibility to the user. Apple says you need to maintain a recovery contact or keep a recovery key safe. If you lose access and cannot use the required recovery method, Apple cannot recover ADP-protected data for you. Decide how you will preserve and access that recovery method before turning ADP on; it is not simply a security setting with no downside. Apple’s ADP safety guide

Does lifetime storage include stronger privacy?

Duration and encryption are separate plan features. pCloud says its standard Lifetime Premium plans do not include pCloud Encryption; Crypto Lifetime can be purchased separately. Its localized pricing information describes TLS/SSL protection during transfer and AES encryption, but those statements do not establish that every file is end-to-end encrypted. Check the exact plan’s encryption coverage, which data categories it protects, and how keys and recovery work. pCloud Lifetime help

For any provider, do not infer privacy protection from a one-time payment or the word “lifetime.” Compare the actual encryption feature and its recovery arrangements with the files you intend to store.

Keep an independent copy of important files

A separate backup reduces dependence on any one cloud account. An external SSD is one possible local copy, but it does not back itself up: you must create and maintain the copy. Keep files you consider irreplaceable in a place you can access independently, and make sure you know how you would recover your cloud account and any encryption recovery key or contact.
