Google announced presentations for Google Docs on September 17, 2007, bringing browser-based slide creation into its hosted suite alongside documents and spreadsheets. At launch, users could build slides online, import a PowerPoint PPT file, collaborate with others, and present to viewers over the web.
When did Google Docs add presentations?
Google announced the feature on September 17, 2007. The Official Google Blog described presentations as a new addition to the Docs document list, which already included documents and spreadsheets. Google’s launch announcement and a Google Workspace Updates notice both carry that date.
What could Google Docs presentations do at launch?
Create and import slides in a browser
Users could sign in to Google Docs, select New > Presentation, and start building slides in the browser. Google also said users could upload an existing PowerPoint PPT file. The launch descriptions establish PPT import, but do not specify a broader range of supported formats or conversion details. Google Workspace Updates
Share and collaborate
Presentations could be shared with invited people or an organization, and multiple collaborators could edit together in real time. Google also described contributions happening at different times, making the feature useful for both simultaneous work and asynchronous collaboration. Official Google Blog · Google Cloud Blog

Present to viewers online
A presenter could invite viewers to follow along through a link; chat was available during the online presentation. This was a browser-based way to share a live presentation, rather than a claim about later Google Slides features. Official Google Blog
Who could use it, and what did Google say about availability?
Google’s Cloud Blog said Google Apps users could create, share, upload, and collaborate on presentations as part of Google Docs. The Workspace Updates notice listed Standard, Premier, Education, and Partner Editions and specified US English. Separately, the Official Google Blog said the feature was available in 25 languages. These are descriptions from distinct Google posts, so the figures should not be combined into a universal statement about every account’s language or edition availability. Why was the feature added to Google Docs?
In April 2007, Google announced its acquisition of Tonic Systems, whose technology focused on presentation creation and document conversion. Engineering Director Sam Schillace said it would be an addition as Google expanded sharing and collaboration in Docs. That announcement provides context for the September launch, but does not establish that Tonic Systems alone supplied every part of the feature. Google’s acquisition announcement

Google’s September press announcement described the capabilities as “still in simple, early stages” and said the company planned to continue improving them. That was Google’s own assessment at launch, not an independent product review. Attila Bodis, a Google software engineer, summarized the intended use: “The new presentations feature of Google Docs helps you to easily organize, share, present, and collaborate on presentations, using only a web browser.” Official Google Blog · Google press announcement
