To change Apple Pay’s default card on an iPhone, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults > Transaction Defaults. That screen also holds the default shipping address and contact details; a card’s billing address is changed separately in Wallet. For Google Pay tap-to-pay, now managed in the Google Wallet app, open the card and choose Make default for tap to pay. Google’s documented address details are billing information tied to card setup, not a universal wallet shipping-address default.

Apple Pay on iPhone: change the default card and shipping/contact details

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Apple Pay Defaults.
  4. Under Transaction Defaults, choose the default card, shipping address, email address, and phone number you want used for transactions.

Apple describes these as transaction defaults. The shipping address and contact fields here are distinct from the billing address attached to an individual payment card. See Apple’s iPhone Wallet & Apple Pay settings guide.

Change an Apple Pay card’s billing address

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap the payment card to update.
  2. Tap More, then Card Details.
  3. Tap Billing Address.
  4. Select an address or choose Enter New Billing Address.

Apple says billing, shipping, and contact information can be stored for a card, and some merchants may let you update details during app or online checkout. The billing address path above may differ on iOS or iPadOS 15 and earlier, where Card Details may not appear as described in the current guide. See Apple’s instructions for updating Apple Pay information.

Google Pay: set the Google Wallet tap-to-pay default

Google’s current help uses Google Wallet as the app name. Its default-payment-method instructions concern the card used for contactless tap-to-pay.

  • Designed with both style and function in mind, the new iPhone FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe is the perfect way to keep your ID and credit cards close at hand.
  • It supports Find My, so you can be notified of your wallet’s last known location if it gets separated from your phone.
  • Made from durable micro-twill, the material has a smooth and seamless feel.
  • The FineWoven material in this accessory is made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled content and significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to leather.
  • The wallet features strong built-in magnets that allow it to effortlessly snap into place on the back of your iPhone.
  1. Open Google Wallet and swipe to the card you want as the default.
  2. Tap the card, then tap Details at the bottom.
  3. Tap Make default for tap to pay. The exact wording may vary slightly by language.

The first payment method added becomes the initial contactless default. You can use another card for a particular tap by opening that card before paying. Google also documents a restriction for store or private-label credit cards: one can be the default only if it is the only card added. See Google Wallet’s default payment method instructions.

What “payment address” means in Google Wallet

Google’s instructions here do not describe an Apple-style wallet-wide shipping address default. When adding a card, the name, CVC, and billing address should match the information the bank has on file. That is card setup and issuer-verification information, while the default card setting controls contactless payments. See Google’s card-addition guidance.

If setup fails over address or card details, check those details against the bank’s records and confirm that both the card and issuer support Google Wallet. A physical card’s ability to make contactless payments does not by itself guarantee Google Wallet compatibility.

Other devices use different settings

Device Where to change the default Address or contact details
Apple Watch On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, then Wallet & Apple Pay, and choose the default card. Apple’s Watch workflow also manages transaction shipping and contact defaults through Wallet & Apple Pay settings.
iPad or Apple Vision Pro Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. Transaction defaults include shipping and contact information.
Mac with Touch ID Open System Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay; older macOS versions use System Preferences. Use the Mac settings interface for default card and contact/shipping controls.
Wear OS watch For Wear OS 3, open the card menu and choose Make default for pay contactless. For Wear OS 2, use the card’s More menu and choose Set as default card. These watch instructions differ from the phone steps; see Google’s smartwatch instructions.

If Google Wallet still will not tap to pay

Changing the default card selects which card Wallet attempts to use; it does not ensure the phone is ready for contactless payments. Google lists these prerequisites:

  • NFC is turned on.
  • Google Wallet is selected as the phone’s default NFC wallet app.
  • The card and country are supported for contactless payments.
  • The phone has a screen lock and meets Google’s security requirements.

A suspended or incompletely set-up card may require issuer verification or help from the bank. Google’s full checklist is in Tap to pay with your phone.

If the wrong card was charged or a payment was declined

Check the contactless-default mark on the card in Google Wallet; Google says the selected default is what Wallet uses at tap-to-pay terminals. If that card is declined, contact the bank about the account. If the bank finds no account issue, Google advises contacting the retailer.

Why Apple Pay and Google Wallet address settings are not equivalent

Apple documents two different kinds of information: a card-specific billing address and transaction defaults for the default card, shipping address, email, and phone. Google’s cited instructions cover the contactless default card and billing details used when adding a card. Choose the setting that matches what you are trying to change—billing at card setup or checkout, shipping/contact details for an Apple Pay transaction, or the card used at a contactless terminal. Menu labels and availability can vary by operating system, region, device, issuer, and supported card.
