Choose an open-world space game by checking whether your friends can travel and make meaningful progress together—not just whether the game is online or has a large universe. Verify co-op explicitly, then compare shared activities, how the world connects, grouping, onboarding, and the balance of exploration, combat, building, trading, and PvP.
Is this multiplayer or co-op?
“Multiplayer” can mean that other players exist in the game, while co-op means you and your friends can work together on shared activities. A title can be open-world and multiplayer-free: ROCKFISH Games describes EVERSPACE 2 as a single-player open-world RPG, not a multiplayer or co-op game. Check the developer’s explicit description before assuming that a large explorable world supports online group play.
What does open-world exploration feel like?
Look for how players move between locations. Can the group travel among star systems, planets, space stations, and missions as part of a connected adventure, or does exploration mainly take place in separate levels and locations? The distinction affects whether a session feels like a shared journey or a sequence of discrete activities.
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as an open universe with travel from planetary surface to space and the ability to visit stars. That is an example of exploration continuity, not a guarantee that every open-world space game connects its locations in the same way.

Can your group do the activities it cares about?
Check whether friends can participate together in the specific things they want to do: travel, fight, build, gather resources, take missions, or advance story content. A game may support co-op while limiting which activities are shared, so a general multiplayer label is not enough to judge whether it fits your group.
Hello Games lists exploration, space battles, communal bases, and shared story progression among No Man’s Sky’s activities. Consider whether that mix matches your group’s priorities; the feature list alone does not establish how enjoyable or technically reliable a particular session will be.

How do friends group up and share a world?
Look for the practical route from launching the game to playing together: friend invites, party formation, matchmaking, access to a persistent world, and whether players can remain grouped while changing activities. These are separate questions from whether the game has an online mode.
For example, Roberts Space Industries documents how to group with friends in Star Citizen, and its getting-started guide identifies the Persistent Universe as a game mode. Those documents establish that grouping and that mode are supported; they do not establish that every session is seamless or technically reliable.

What does a player-count figure actually describe?
Read the context attached to any player count. A number for a social hub is not automatically a party limit or a promise that the same number can take part in every mission or activity.
Hello Games says up to 32 players can use No Man’s Sky’s Space Anomaly social hub. Treat that as a figure for the hub only; it does not state the co-op group cap for all locations and activities.

How much learning does the group want to take on?
Compare the systems a group will need to learn before deciding that a game is an easy or difficult fit. Relevant demands can include flight controls, navigation, crafting, survival, and the in-game economy, as well as how much players may need to rely on external guides.
Star Citizen’s beginner documentation points players to multiple modes and an in-world interaction system. That is a reason to evaluate onboarding separately from the multiplayer feature list, not evidence for a blanket difficulty rating or a comparison with another game.

Which kind of space activity does your group want?
Choose based on the activities and risks your group enjoys: exploration, ship combat, construction, resource collection, trading, or PvP. Games can share a space setting without offering the same balance of activities or the same kind of cooperative play.
No Man’s Sky’s official description includes exploration and combat. CCP frames EVE Online as a social space MMO and discusses ship modules in its 2026 updates. These descriptions illustrate different activity emphases; they do not establish equivalent co-op structures. CCP’s 2026 letter describes an intended progression from solo play toward co-play and shared purpose, which is the developer’s stated direction rather than a guarantee about every current activity.
What to verify before choosing
Online features and limits can vary by game, platform, edition, and update. Before your group commits, check the current documentation for the details that matter to your setup:
- Whether online co-op is supported, and which activities friends can do together.
- How invites, parties, matchmaking, and access to a persistent world work.
- Whether the supported platforms and editions match across your group, including cross-play and save or session persistence.
- Which player-count figures apply to the activity you plan to play, rather than to a hub or another mode.
- What onboarding and game systems the group must learn, and whether PvP creates risks your group wants to accept.
These details are not established consistently across the examples above, so confirm them in the current game and platform documentation rather than inferring them from an open-world or multiplayer label.
