You need a coaxial splitter if one TV antenna must feed two or more TVs, DVRs, or other compatible receivers. For one TV, connect the antenna directly. A passive splitter divides the signal and reduces the power reaching each receiver, so reliable reception depends on whether the antenna signal has enough margin to absorb that loss.
When you need a splitter
One TV
Connect the antenna coax directly to the TV or tuner. A splitter does not improve reception and is unnecessary unless the installation has another distribution need.
Two or more receivers
Use a splitter with enough outputs for the receivers you want to connect. Each TV uses its own tuner, so the TVs can independently select received over-the-air channels. Channel Master explains how one antenna feed can be distributed to multiple televisions.
How much signal a splitter loses
A passive splitter divides RF power among its outputs, and the splitting process adds insertion loss. Channel Master publishes these typical per-output ranges; actual loss varies by splitter specification and frequency, so check the chosen unit’s specifications:

- MULTI-PURPOSE – This coax splitter is designed for use with amplifiers, amplified antennas, HDTVs and more
- FREQUENCY RANGE – Distributes a digital signal in the 5-2500 MHz Frequency Range
- CORROSION RESISTANT – The gold plated RG6 connectors allows for optimal connectivity
- ALL BRANDS – Compatible with all brands
- CONVENIENCE - Split a single cable or satellite signal to view and display on two separate TVs
| Splitter | Typical loss per output |
|---|---|
| 2-way | About 3.5–4 dB |
| 4-way | About 7–8 dB |
| 8-way | About 10.5–12 dB |
These are manufacturer-published engineering figures, not measurements for every splitter. Channel Master also notes that a 6 dB reduction corresponds to about one quarter of the original RF power. Loss is not the only factor: coax length, connectors, wall plates, and additional splitters also reduce the signal. A setup that works with one TV may become marginal after distribution.
What to do if reception becomes unreliable
Check the signal path first
Consider the total path from the antenna to each receiver, including cable length and every passive component. Check for damaged coax, loose or open connectors, and a defective splitter before assuming the antenna needs replacement. The FCC antenna and digital television guide also identifies inadequate booster or distribution amplification as a possible issue.

Use amplification only for the right problem
If the signal arriving from the antenna is usable but the distribution network consumes too much margin, a distribution amplifier may help compensate for downstream losses. If the signal is already weak at the antenna, address antenna placement, aiming, interference, or signal quality first. A preamplifier placed near the antenna may help preserve a usable signal before cable and distribution losses, but amplification cannot repair interference or multipath. An amplifier can also worsen reception if the input overloads it. Antennas Direct’s preamplifier guidance discusses these considerations.
Check power-pass requirements for an antenna preamplifier
If a mast-mounted preamplifier is powered through the coax, a splitter or other component between it and its power inserter must pass DC power along the required path. A splitter may pass TV-frequency signals while blocking the DC power the preamplifier needs. Check the equipment manufacturer’s power-pass requirements and the splitter’s port labeling before installing it. Philips provides model-specific details in its guidance for connecting one antenna to multiple televisions.

And the abrasion-resistant outer sheath withstands frequent bending and rubbing to ensure long-lasting performance!
- WIDE APPLICATION:F-Type splitter coaxial cable features an F Male to Dual F Female splitter design for cable, CATV, VCR, DVD, HDTV and cable antenna extension distribution cable connections. With 75 ohm impedance, it ensures low signal loss, provides clear audio and video, and enhances channel reception.
- TOOL-FREE INSTALLATION: F-Type splitter coaxial cable features a simple screw-in design for effortless, tool-free installation. Its plug-and-play feature ensures a hassle-free installation, eliminating the need for a complicated installation process. Designed for everyday use, it provides time-saving connections.
Choose the setup based on your installation
- One receiver: Connect the antenna directly to it.
- Several receivers and a strong, usable antenna signal: Use a splitter with enough outputs, accounting for its insertion loss and the losses on each cable run.
- Several receivers and a usable signal that weakens through distribution: Consider a distribution amplifier, while checking for overload risk.
- Poor reception before splitting: Investigate antenna placement, aiming, interference, and signal quality rather than expecting a splitter or amplifier to fix the underlying problem.
- A powered preamplifier: Confirm that the selected splitter passes DC power on the required path.
The right choice depends on the antenna signal, number of receivers, cable-run lengths, existing equipment, and the specifications of the splitter or amplifier. Without those details, no single splitter or amplifier choice is right for every household.
