If the TV room has coax but no Ethernet run, MoCA adapters can use the coax wiring as the in-wall part of a wired network. A coax jack by itself is not the same as the TV’s Ethernet port: the MoCA adapters provide the bridge.

Can you use the coax outlet behind the TV for internet?
Not by connecting that outlet directly to a typical TV’s coax input. The setup described by Verizon’s MoCA adapter information uses an adapter to bridge between Ethernet and the home’s coax wiring. At the TV end, an Ethernet cable runs from the adapter to the TV’s Ethernet LAN port.
MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) is a way to carry network traffic over coax cable already in the home. It can be useful when coax is installed in the TV room but running a new Ethernet cable is inconvenient. Whether it works depends on how the home’s coax is connected and on the available router or gateway equipment.
When direct Ethernet is the better choice
If the TV has an Ethernet LAN port and a cable can reach a LAN port on your router or network switch, direct Ethernet is the simpler wired connection. It needs no MoCA adapters and avoids relying on the coax wiring between rooms.

Connect the cable to the TV’s Ethernet LAN port and to a LAN port on the router or switch. If the TV has no Ethernet LAN port, this direct method is not available as described here.
How to get Ethernet to a TV room with coax
A MoCA setup uses adapters to turn Ethernet into a signal carried over coax, then back into Ethernet near the TV. The exact ports and any splitter arrangement depend on the adapter and existing TV equipment; follow the device’s instructions. Verizon’s adapter user guide depicts Ethernet from an adapter to the router and coax from the adapter to a home coax outlet. It also shows a splitter when an existing TV or set-top-box connection needs to share an outlet.

- Check the router end. Confirm that the router or gateway supports MoCA, or plan to use a compatible adapter connected to it by Ethernet. A setup needs a way to bridge the router’s Ethernet connection onto the coax network.
- Check the coax path. Confirm that the outlet near the router and the outlet behind the TV connect through a usable coax network. Outlet presence alone does not prove the two locations are linked appropriately.
- Connect the router-side adapter. Use Ethernet to connect it to a LAN port on the router or gateway, and connect it to the home coax network as directed by its instructions.
- Connect the TV-room adapter. Attach it to the coax outlet, then run Ethernet from the adapter’s Ethernet port to the TV’s Ethernet LAN port. Use the specified splitter arrangement if coax must also serve TV or set-top-box equipment.
- Check the connection. Follow the adapter and TV instructions to verify that the network link is active. If it does not work, recheck the coax path, router-side MoCA support or adapter, and the port connections.
Verizon describes its MoCA adapter as compatible with Ethernet-equipped devices including TVs and streaming media devices. The equipment and wiring requirements can vary by home, so check the documentation for your specific router, gateway, and adapters.

The MoCA Alliance lists MoCA Home 2.5 specifications of 2.5 Gbps MAC throughput and less than 2.5 ms average one-way latency on its MoCA Home 2.5 overview. These are standard specifications, not a promise of the speed or latency a particular household will achieve. Actual results depend on the equipment and coax setup; Verizon also notes that bandwidth is shared among MoCA devices.

The available specifications do not establish that MoCA will be faster or slower than a particular Ethernet run in your home. Nor does an Alliance testimonial comparing MoCA favorably with Wi-Fi constitute a controlled head-to-head test. Choose based on the connection route you can reliably provide rather than assuming a guaranteed speed advantage.

What to check before buying MoCA adapters
- Router or gateway support: Find out whether it has MoCA capability. If not, the setup needs an adapter on the router end as well as a compatible adapter near the TV.
- Coax continuity: The outlets need to connect through a coax network that supports the chosen setup. A coax socket in each room does not, by itself, establish that the rooms are connected.
- TV and other equipment: The TV needs an Ethernet LAN port to connect to the remote adapter. If the coax outlet also serves a TV or set-top box, check whether the adapter instructions call for a splitter.
- Adapter compatibility: Look for products designed for the MoCA standard you intend to use. The MoCA Alliance says certified products undergo independent compliance and interoperability testing; its certified-products list can help you check models. Certification does not guarantee that a particular home’s wiring will deliver a specific result.
