For a typical app-based payment to a person or merchant, start with UPI. Choose IMPS when you need an instant bank transfer through a bank-enabled channel but do not want to rely on the UPI route. NEFT is suitable when half-hourly batch processing is acceptable. Use RTGS for transfers of ₹2 lakh or more when continuous, transaction-by-transaction settlement is preferred. Your bank’s current limits, channel availability, and charges can change the practical choice.

UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS at a glance

Method How it processes transfers Availability described by the system operator Amount facts in official material Often useful for Check before sending
UPI Instant, app-centered payments, including person-to-person and merchant payments. NPCI describes UPI as available 24/7. NPCI’s customer FAQ lists up to ₹1 lakh for a normal transaction, with higher limits for selected categories, including up to ₹2 lakh or ₹5 lakh. The FAQ does not display a clear revision date; current category and participant limits should be checked in the app. NPCI UPI FAQ Everyday payments when the payer’s bank and recipient’s payment route are supported. Confirm the payee or VPA and amount. Never share your UPI PIN.
IMPS Instant interbank transfer. NPCI describes IMPS as available 24/7, including holidays. NPCI lists up to ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR; bank-specific rules apply. NPCI IMPS FAQ An instant bank transfer through an enabled app, internet, or other participating channel. Check the channel’s limit and verify the recipient and account details.
NEFT Transfers are processed in half-hourly batches rather than continuously, transaction by transaction. RBI describes NEFT as operating 24x7x365. The RBI FAQ extract states no system-wide minimum or maximum, but a member bank may set its own risk limits. RBI describes 48 half-hourly batches in a 24x7x365 service; the extract’s revision date is not established. RBI NEFT FAQ A transfer where batch processing is acceptable and the bank’s rules permit the amount. Check your bank’s limit, the next batch cycle, and any applicable customer fee.
RTGS Continuous real-time gross settlement, processed individually rather than netted. RBI describes RTGS as operating 24x7x365. Minimum ₹2 lakh; RBI sets no upper ceiling. The RTGS FAQ was updated October 31, 2022. RBI RTGS FAQ A transfer of ₹2 lakh or more when continuous settlement is preferred. Check bank access and charges; carefully enter the beneficiary’s bank, IFSC, and account number.

These are rail-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every bank channel will be available at every moment. A bank may apply its own limits, terms, and charges.

Which payment method should you use?

For an everyday app payment: UPI

Choose UPI when both sides’ chosen routes are supported and the amount fits the current limit set by your bank, app, and transaction category. UPI supports app-based merchant payments and can use a virtual payment address (VPA). NPCI says users register with a participating provider and link an account or supported instrument; the available routes and features vary by provider and issuing bank. NPCI UPI FAQ

For an instant bank transfer outside the UPI route: IMPS

Use IMPS if you need an instant interbank transfer and your bank offers it through the channel you intend to use. NPCI’s stated ₹5 lakh per-transaction figure excludes SMS and IVR channels; confirm the limit that applies to your bank and channel. NPCI IMPS FAQ

For ₹2 lakh or more when continuous settlement is preferred: RTGS

RTGS meets the RBI-stated ₹2 lakh minimum and processes transactions continuously, one by one. RBI sets no maximum for the system, but your bank may impose channel or account limits. RBI RTGS FAQ

What the timing and availability terms mean

“Instant” describes the payment system, not every possible outcome

NPCI describes UPI payments as instant and available 24/7, and IMPS as a 24/7 instant transfer service. Those are general system descriptions, not promises that a bank app, network, or individual transaction will never experience an interruption or delay. NPCI UPI FAQ NPCI IMPS FAQ

NEFT runs in batches; RTGS settles continuously

RBI describes NEFT as processing transactions received up to a particular time in batches. Its FAQ extract describes half-hourly cycles. RTGS instead settles transactions continuously and individually. Both services are described by RBI as available 24x7x365, but system operating hours alone do not guarantee that a specific bank channel is accessible at a given time. RBI RTGS FAQ RBI NEFT FAQ

Limits and recipient details to check

Limits are not all the same kind of limit

The figures above come from official system descriptions, not a universal promise about every bank app. NPCI’s UPI FAQ gives ₹1 lakh for normal UPI transactions and lists higher limits for selected categories, including up to ₹2 lakh or ₹5 lakh. NPCI’s IMPS FAQ lists up to ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR. RBI states that RTGS has a ₹2 lakh minimum and no RBI-set maximum; its NEFT FAQ extract gives no system-wide floor or ceiling while allowing member banks to set limits. Check the payee before confirming

For UPI, verify the recipient shown for the VPA or other enabled payment route and check the amount. NPCI says that once a UPI payment has been initiated, it cannot be stopped. Never disclose your UPI PIN. NPCI UPI FAQ

For RTGS, RBI lists the beneficiary’s bank and branch, IFSC, name, and account number among the details used for a transfer. RBI warns that credit is based on the beneficiary account number, so enter it carefully. RBI RTGS FAQ

RBI directed participating NEFT and RTGS banks to provide, by April 1, 2025, an account-name lookup based on the entered account number and IFSC through internet banking, mobile banking, and branches, without charge. Treat the displayed name as an additional check, not a replacement for confirming the recipient’s details. RBI notification of December 30, 2024

What to verify in your bank app

  • Whether your bank offers the chosen method in the channel you plan to use.
  • The current transaction limit for your account, channel, and payment type.
  • The recipient name and payment details displayed before confirmation.
  • Any fee shown for that account and channel.
  • For NEFT, that half-hourly batch processing is suitable for the payment’s timing.
  • For RTGS, that the transfer meets the ₹2 lakh minimum and that the beneficiary bank, IFSC, and account number are correct.
