That is an intriguing link—not proof that gut bacteria cause brain aging, a way to predict your future from a stool sample, or a validated consumer test.
How did researchers estimate brain age?
The researchers analyzed brain scans from nearly 1,500 adults across three groups. They used patterns of communication between brain regions while participants were at rest to estimate brain age. They then compared each estimate with the participant’s chronological age to calculate a Brain Aging Index (BAI). The total of nearly 1,500 is reported by UCLA Health; exact counts for the individual groups are not given in the accessible release.
BAI is a research measure, not a clinical diagnosis. It does not tell an individual whether they have dementia or provide a personal prognosis for future cognitive decline.
What did the study find about brain function and mood?
Across all three groups, a higher BAI was associated with worse working memory and executive function, as well as more reported symptoms of depression. These are associations: the reported results do not show that a higher BAI caused those outcomes.

What was the connection to gut bacteria?
In one group, researchers also analyzed stool samples. They reported associations between higher BAI and particular gut bacteria and metabolic byproducts. The UCLA Health release mentions certain fat molecules, a cholesterol-related compound and lower levels of estetrol, but does not identify the bacterial taxa or exact compounds, report effect sizes, or give the stool-sample subgroup size. Those details therefore cannot be used to identify a particular bacterium or metabolite as a marker for an individual.
The study is described as a multicohort, cross-sectional study. It captures associations rather than establishing what came first: gut changes might affect brain biology, brain changes might affect the gut, or other influences might affect both. It also does not establish that changing gut bacteria would change brain age or cognitive outcomes.

Does this mean a stool test can predict brain aging decades ahead?
No. The study used stool samples as part of research; its reported findings do not validate a consumer microbiome test, probiotic, fiber supplement or brain-age scan as a way to measure, predict or reverse brain aging.
Senior author Dr. Arpana Church, co-director of the Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center at UCLA Health, said: “Brain aging doesn’t suddenly begin when we get older, but the biological signals may be detectable decades earlier.” That is Church’s interpretation of the findings, not evidence that this study proved a stool test can predict brain aging decades in advance.

What evidence would show whether gut changes influence brain aging?
Different study designs answer different questions:
- Cross-sectional association: Measures factors at a point in time and can reveal patterns, as this study did, but cannot establish causal direction.
- Longitudinal research: Follows people over time to test whether gut measures precede later changes in brain-age estimates or cognitive outcomes. Prediction would still not, by itself, prove causation.
- Intervention trials: Test whether deliberately changing gut biology changes brain-related outcomes. The UCLA Health release presents this as a possibility for future research, not a demonstrated treatment.
What study is this?
The findings are described in a UCLA Health release syndicated by ScienceDaily on October 4, 2026. The release cites Kanhao Zhao et al., “Brain-gut crosstalk associated with brain ageing in young and mid-life adults: a multicohort cross-sectional study,” eBioMedicine 132 (2026), article 106468, DOI 10.1016/j.ebiom.2026.106468. The accessible release does not provide exact cohort counts, effect sizes, named bacterial taxa or fuller methods, so those details remain unclear from the reported information.
