The Elder Scrolls VI is expected to be an RPG, but Bethesda has not explicitly confirmed its genre in the official pages cited here. Bethesda describes it as the next chapter in The Elder Scrolls series, not as a strategy game or any other specific genre. The most accurate answer is therefore an informed expectation, not a confirmed specification.

What Bethesda has confirmed about The Elder Scrolls VI

Bethesda’s official material identifies The Elder Scrolls VI as the next chapter in the series. Its June 10, 2018 announcement called it “the highly-anticipated next chapter in the iconic The Elder Scrolls series.” Bethesda Support’s official announcement page likewise describes the project and its development status. Neither page gives the game an explicit genre label.

That distinction matters: “next chapter” establishes the game’s place in the franchise, but does not by itself confirm what its gameplay will be. The cited pages also do not provide gameplay details that would support classifying it as a strategy game or another genre.

Why an RPG is the strongest expectation

The RPG expectation comes from the series’ history and Bethesda’s own descriptions of related games. Bethesda Game Studios presents titles including Morrowind and Skyrim in its Elder Scrolls lineage, and describes Starfield as a role-playing game. Bethesda also calls The Elder Scrolls Online an online RPG. Taken together, that makes RPG the best-supported expectation for a new mainline Elder Scrolls game.

#1 Best Overall
The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim Anniversary Edition (Xbox One)
  • Box contains a disc
  • Persistent broadband internet connection required for use of online functionality and downloads of updates

Those examples are precedent, not a genre announcement for The Elder Scrolls VI. Until Bethesda labels this specific game or reveals enough gameplay to assess it, “expected to be an RPG” is more precise than “confirmed as an RPG.”

Why the Elder Scrolls name does not settle the genre

Franchise membership alone is not a reliable genre test. Bethesda Support says of Redguard and Battlespire: “Redguard and Battlespire were set in the Elder Scrolls universe, and play a part in the overall history of the Elder Scrolls, but neither was a true role-playing game in the Elder Scrolls tradition.” That official distinction shows that a game can belong to the Elder Scrolls universe without being a traditional series RPG.

How to judge a future genre announcement

When Bethesda shares more about the game, separate three kinds of evidence:

  • An official genre label: If Bethesda calls The Elder Scrolls VI an RPG, that is the clearest basis for reporting its announced genre.
  • Revealed gameplay systems: If no label is given, describe the systems Bethesda actually shows and explain what they suggest without treating an inference as a confirmation.
  • Series precedent: Earlier Elder Scrolls RPGs make an RPG a reasonable expectation, but history alone cannot establish the unreleased game’s final classification.

A teaser or the franchise name alone cannot settle whether the game is an RPG, strategy game, or another genre. On the official evidence cited here, strategy is not an established competing classification.
