Apple said it was up to 20 percent faster on CPU and up to 30 percent faster on GPU than M1 Ultra; those are Apple’s launch claims, not independent benchmark results.
What is the M2 Ultra chip?
M2 Ultra is Apple’s desktop-class system-on-chip (SoC), a single package that brings together the processor, graphics, memory system and other components. Apple announced it on June 5, 2023, describing it as two M2 Max dies connected using its UltraFusion packaging architecture. Apple said the chip contains 134 billion transistors.
Apple introduced the chip in the 2023 Mac Studio and Mac Pro. It is not a standalone computer: to use an M2 Ultra, you need a complete Mac built around it.
How many CPU and GPU cores does the M2 Ultra have?
The M2 Ultra has a 24-core CPU, a 32-core Neural Engine, and either a 60-core or 76-core GPU. Apple’s specifications also list up to 192 GB of unified memory and 800 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

“Up to” matters for the GPU and memory: not every M2 Ultra configuration has the maximum. When comparing two Macs, check their full configurations rather than relying on the chip name alone.
How much faster is M2 Ultra than M1 Ultra?
Apple’s June 2023 announcement claimed up to 20 percent faster CPU performance and up to 30 percent faster GPU performance than M1 Ultra. Apple also claimed the 32-core Neural Engine was up to 40 percent faster. These are Apple’s comparisons from the chip’s launch, not independent measurements, and the figures should not be treated as guaranteed gains for every app or workload.

Apple also published results from company testing in April and May 2023 using preproduction Mac Pro systems configured with M2 Ultra, a 24-core CPU, 76-core GPU, 192 GB of RAM and an 8 TB SSD. Those results describe Apple-run tests on that specific configuration, not a universal performance outcome.
Which Macs have the M2 Ultra?
Apple introduced M2 Ultra in two desktop models: the 2023 Mac Studio and the 2023 Mac Pro. The Mac Studio is a compact desktop; the Mac Pro is a tower designed for buyers whose needs may include its system-level expansion options. The chip alone does not determine which computer is the better fit: consider the specific workload, memory and storage configuration, connections and expansion requirements.

Is an M2 Ultra Mac still available?
Apple’s current Mac Studio store page lists M5 Max and M5 Ultra systems, not M2 Ultra configurations. Apple announced those newer systems on August 25, 2026, with pre-orders beginning that day and deliveries starting September 22, 2026. Apple Support still identifies a 2023 Mac Studio with M2 Ultra, but that model identification does not establish current Apple sales or the availability of any particular used or refurbished listing.
A Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is therefore an older-generation system to evaluate through remaining stock or the used and refurbished market. Before buying, verify the seller, device condition, warranty, exact memory and storage, price and return terms. Compare the complete system with currently offered Macs against the demands of your actual work; the sources here do not establish a current M2 Ultra price or specific listing.
