But the patent is not proof that Intel will use the technique in future CPUs—or that it replaces Hyper-Threading. Intel separately confirms that its Core Ultra Processors (Series 2) omit Hyper-Threading; the available product information does not establish that they use the patented scheduling method.
What Intel’s partitioned-thread patent describes
Intel’s application, “Methods and Apparatus to Schedule Parallel Instructions Using Hybrid Cores”, was filed on January 25, 2023, published on June 1, 2023, and assigned to Intel Corporation. It describes circuitry that can divide a parallel thread into partitions, select different cores for different partitions, and generate an execution schedule.
The disclosure describes assessing partition complexity and assigning work to performance or efficiency cores. It also allows the operating-system scheduler to accept, modify, or reject the proposed schedule. In other words, the patent presents a way hardware and scheduling software could coordinate work across a hybrid processor; it does not establish how a shipping processor actually behaves.
Does that mean Hyper-Threading is going away?
No such product-wide conclusion follows from the patent. The patent describes an example technique, not a confirmed roadmap, a named future processor, or a declared replacement for Hyper-Threading. HotHardware connected the disclosure to the possibility of Intel dropping Hyper-Threading, but its August 16, 2023 article framed that product link as speculation: HotHardware’s coverage.

Intel’s later announcement of Core Ultra 200S Plus desktop processors is a product update, but it does not confirm that partitioned thread scheduling has shipped or replaced Hyper-Threading: Intel’s announcement.
What Intel has confirmed about Hyper-Threading in products
Intel’s support article, last reviewed January 14, 2025, says Core Ultra Processors (Series 2) are designed without Intel Hyper-Threading Technology. For those processors, the core count equals the thread count. Intel gives the Core Ultra 7 Processor 265 as an example: it has 8 Performance-cores and 12 Efficient-cores, for 20 cores and 20 threads. See Intel’s Hyper-Threading support guidance.

This confirms a no-Hyper-Threading design for the identified product family. It does not confirm that Series 2 processors implement the patent’s partitioning method. A processor can omit Hyper-Threading without using this particular alternative.
How this differs from existing hybrid-core scheduling
Intel’s hybrid processors already combine Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-cores), with operating-system policy and Intel Thread Director workload hints involved in scheduling. Intel’s 12th Gen developer guide advises software developers to enumerate logical-processor topology rather than assume every core is alike or simply double the physical-core count.

The guide also describes a Windows strategy that uses performant cores first and brings in simultaneous multithreading (SMT) siblings later to reduce contention. That existing approach provides context for hybrid scheduling; it is not evidence that the patent’s thread partitions are deployed in later products.
| Approach | What the operating system sees | How parallel work is described | What is established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMT / Hyper-Threading | Multiple logical processors can be exposed by one physical core. | Logical processors share a physical core. | Intel documents the model and associated guidance; actual performance depends on the processor and workload. |
| Partitioned-thread method in the patent | The patent describes sending an execution schedule to a device that schedules instructions on selected cores. | Partitions of a parallel thread can be assigned to different cores, including different core types. | The patent describes the concept; implementation in a named shipping product is not established. |
Performance, power, and security: what remains unknown
The patent’s illustrative examples are not independent benchmark results. Without measurements on a shipping processor and defined workloads, they do not establish that partitioned scheduling improves speed, power use, or responsiveness compared with Hyper-Threading.

Intel’s security guidance notes that logical processors sharing a core may share indirect branch predictors. It describes Single Thread Indirect Branch Predictors (STIBP) as a mechanism to restrict that sharing: Intel’s Hyper-Threading security guidance. This is a documented security consideration, not evidence that security motivated the patent or that partitioning resolves SMT security concerns.

To establish that partitioned thread scheduling is a product feature, an announcement or technical document would need to connect the method to a named processor and explain how it works in that product. A processor’s lack of Hyper-Threading, its use of hybrid cores, or an update to a product family does not by itself make that connection.

For now, the grounded distinction is simple: Intel has patented a method for scheduling thread partitions across hybrid cores, and Intel has confirmed that Core Ultra Series 2 processors omit Hyper-Threading. The available evidence does not show that the former explains or replaces the latter.
