Google Maps Timeline can show places you visited and routes you took, making it useful for retracing a trip or remembering a stop. It is an opt-in feature that saves precise location data on eligible devices. Because Timeline is now device-based, check the phone that holds the history—and enable its separate backup option if you want a copy for moving to another device.
What Google Maps Timeline records
Google describes Timeline as a personal map of places visited and routes taken. It is off by default and only begins recording after you opt in. When enabled, it regularly saves precise device location, including when Google apps are not open. Location estimates can draw on GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, and device sensors, according to Google’s Timeline privacy information and Google Account Help.
Google’s wording is: “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” Google also says Timeline is off or unavailable when its systems indicate that a user may be under 18.
How to see Timeline in Google Maps
Timeline is viewed and managed in the Google Maps mobile app, not on the desktop Maps website. Google says the data comes directly from the device, and its documented controls are for Android and iOS. Update Maps if you do not see Timeline, then use the current in-app controls; menu wording and app requirements can change. Google’s help pages list Android Maps version 11.106 and later and iOS version 6.93 and later, though eligibility and current release requirements may vary.

- Android: Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Your Timeline.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Your Timeline.

Can you get Timeline back on a new phone?
Possibly, if you enabled Timeline backup on the device that held the history. Google offers an optional encrypted server backup that can be imported on another device. It is a separate setting for each device; Timeline being on does not mean backup is on. Google says auto-delete must be off to enable backup, and changes may take a few days to appear in the backup.

- On the phone that currently has the Timeline you want, open Google Maps and go to Your Timeline.
- Open Timeline settings and check the backup status. Turn on backup if you want an encrypted copy stored on Google’s servers.
- On the new phone, open Timeline settings and choose the available option to import a backup.
- If you are replacing or resetting the old phone, verify that the desired history is present in Timeline and that the backup is current before proceeding.
Google also documents exporting Timeline data from the phone. On iOS, its help page says the export is saved as location-history.json; the export process differs by platform. A backup is for transferring an existing copy, not a way to retrieve Timeline from a lost device if no backup was enabled. Google says turning off or deleting backups does not erase Timeline data that remains stored on devices.
How to correct a visit or route
Timeline is a reconstruction aid, not a guaranteed exact diary or proof of where someone was. Google acknowledges that in dense urban areas the app can assign a nearby restaurant instead of the one actually visited. You can edit an incorrect place and adjust the time of a visit from Timeline; use the relevant Android or iOS help guide for the current controls.

How to delete Timeline data—and what deletion does not cover
Google Maps lets you delete all Timeline data or choose a limited period or item. Google warns that deletion is permanent and cannot be recovered. Also, a change made on one device does not automatically update Timeline data on other devices, and data may remain in a backup. Check each device and any backup before assuming a deletion has removed every copy.
Deleting Timeline is not the same as erasing every location-related record associated with your Google Account. Google says location information may also be saved through separate settings, including Web & App Activity or Search Services History. Location information may also appear in photos, depending on camera settings. Review those settings separately if your goal is to manage other Google activity.

What the privacy trade-off means
Keeping Timeline on can make past visits and routes easier to remember, but it also means regularly saving precise device location. You can leave Timeline off, turn it on only if the history is useful to you, and decide separately whether an encrypted backup is worth enabling for transfer or recovery.
Google says Timeline data may be used for personalization, service improvement, fraud and abuse prevention, and anonymized insights. It also says that, depending on settings, businesses can receive estimates of advertising effectiveness, not personal data. These are Google’s descriptions of its own handling and controls, not an independent security assessment.
