If the fog is on the outside, use the wipers and reduce the A/C instead. First identify which side is fogged; if you cannot see clearly, stop somewhere safe before adjusting controls.
Why car windows fog up in rainy weather
Fog is moisture from the air condensed on glass. Rainy weather can bring damp clothing, umbrellas, and passengers into the cabin, adding moisture to its air. When that humid cabin air meets colder glass, condensation forms on the inside. The NHTSA-hosted Windshield Defogging guidance and Nissan’s defogging guidance describe this interior-fog mechanism.
Fog can also form on the outside in warm, humid weather if the A/C cools the glass below the dew point of the air outside. The remedy depends on which side of the glass is wet: heating and ventilating the cabin helps interior fog, while reducing cabin cooling can help exterior fog.
Clear interior fog with the front defrost controls
- Select front defrost or windshield defog. The icon typically shows a curved windshield with rising arrows; check your owner’s manual if you are unsure which control to use.
- Turn recirculation off. Select fresh outside air so the system is not continually circulating moist cabin air.
- Turn on the A/C if available. Air conditioning helps remove moisture from the air, even when you set the cabin heat to a comfortable warm temperature. Chevrolet Canada’s windshield-defogging instructions say, “If defogging, turn the A/C to On.”
- Direct warm airflow at the windshield and raise the fan speed. The warmer air and stronger airflow help clear the glass. Keep the vehicle’s defrost setting engaged while visibility improves.
- After the glass clears, keep fresh air selected and airflow directed at the windshield. Adjust the temperature and fan to a comfortable level rather than switching straight back to recirculation.
Controls and automatic defog features differ by vehicle, so follow your owner’s manual if its instructions differ from this general procedure. For example, the 2026 Hyundai owner manual says its automatic defogging system selects A/C, fresh air, windshield defrost, and maximum fan when it detects high cabin humidity; it also warns against manually selecting recirculation while that system is operating. Those settings are specific to the system described in that manual.

If the fog is on the outside, use a different fix
Run the windshield wipers to clear exterior condensation. If warm, humid weather and cabin cooling are making the outside glass fog, turn down or turn off the A/C and switch off recirculation so conditions at the glass can move closer to the air outside. Nissan describes this approach for warm, humid-weather exterior fog. Do not use the interior-fog routine automatically: directing warm air at the glass may not address condensation on its outer surface.
Reduce the moisture that causes recurring interior fog
- Keep the inside of the glass clean. The NHTSA-hosted defogging guidance recommends clean interior glass as part of preventing fog.
- Shake rain from umbrellas and outerwear before bringing them into the cabin, and avoid leaving wet items inside when possible.
- Use the rear-window defogger for the rear glass when your vehicle is equipped with one. Its function is distinct from the front windshield defrost controls; see the GAC Drive Guideline.
Should you use an interior anti-fog treatment?
An interior car anti-fog treatment is an optional supplement, not a substitute for defrosting and ventilation. Rain-X says its Anti-Fog treatment is intended for interior glass and recommends it for cold or rainy weather. Follow the product label, including its surface-preparation directions. Rain-X says not to use that treatment on tinted windows, acrylic, or plastic.

Check that a product is meant for the surface and side of the glass you plan to treat. Rain-X distinguishes its interior anti-fog treatment from its water-repellent product for exterior glass; the two are not interchangeable. The available guidance does not establish an independently tested product ranking or guarantee that a treatment will prevent fog in every vehicle or condition.
