AMD’s 2012 Trinity desktop APUs combined four Piledriver CPU cores with Radeon graphics on the FM2 platform. The A10-5800K offered higher CPU and integrated-GPU clocks and more graphics cores than the A8-5600K, while both were rated at 100 W. Their integrated graphics were a notable feature for a modest desktop in 2012, but launch-era benchmark results describe old games and software—not what to expect from current workloads.

What Trinity and Virgo meant for a desktop builder

AMD announced retail availability of its second-generation desktop A-Series APUs on October 2, 2012. Trinity was the family codename; the desktop platform used FM2 motherboards, which AMD paired with A55, A75, and A85X chipsets. AMD described the chips as combining Piledriver CPU architecture with Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics. The launch release and model specifications are in AMD’s October 2, 2012 announcement.

“Virgo” appears in the title as a name for the desktop experience around this generation; for a practical parts decision, the important compatibility fact is the FM2 socket. A processor’s socket alone does not prove that it will work in a particular board: check the exact motherboard CPU-support list and required BIOS version before buying or installing one.

A10-5800K vs. A8-5600K specifications

Specification AMD A10-5800K AMD A8-5600K
CPU cores 4 4
CPU base / maximum clock 3.8 / 4.2 GHz 3.6 / 3.9 GHz
Integrated graphics Radeon HD 7660D, 384 graphics cores Radeon HD 7560D, 256 graphics cores
GPU clock 800 MHz 760 MHz
Rated TDP 100 W 100 W
Memory listed by AMD DDR3-1866 DDR3-1866
Launch suggested retail price $122 (AMD’s 2012 suggested price) $101 (AMD’s 2012 suggested price)

The A10’s higher clocks and larger integrated GPU give it the stronger specification sheet, particularly for graphics-heavy tasks that can use the integrated GPU. Both chips have four CPU cores and the same rated TDP, so the A10 is not a different class of socket or power envelope. The launch prices above are historical suggested prices, not indications of present-day used value. AMD also listed 65 W A10-5700 and A8-5500 variants, as well as A6-5400K and A4-5300 models.

What the 2012 performance results show

CPU results depended on the application

In contemporary independent testing, the A10-5800K was not uniformly faster than competing processors. TechSpot’s Excel 2010 test took 12.42 seconds on the A10-5800K: 30% faster than the previous-generation A8-3850, but 5% slower than Intel’s Core i3-3220. In a 700 MB WinRAR compression test, it was 31% faster than the A8-3850 and 9% slower than the Core i3-3220. Another workload on the same review page put the A10 16% ahead of the Core i3-3220. These are test-specific comparisons, not a general ranking of the chips; see TechSpot’s 2012 A10-5800K and A8-5600K review.

Integrated graphics helped in its period

TechSpot recorded 73 fps in StarCraft II and 32 fps in The Witcher 2 on the A10-5800K, both at 1280×800. The same review reported 103 fps in Resident Evil 5 and 49 fps in Max Payne at that resolution. The A10’s advantage over the A8 also varied by game: the review reported a 14% lead in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and a 35% lead in StarCraft II. Those results show why an integrated GPU mattered in a 2012 budget or home-theater PC, but they should not be used to predict performance in current games. The review’s graphics results are at TechSpot’s integrated-graphics benchmarks.

How to read AMD’s launch claims

AMD said its Performance Labs calculated 736 GFLOPS for the A10-5800K from CPU and GPU capacities. That is a theoretical compute-capacity figure, not an independent application benchmark. AMD also reported a PCMark 7 score of 4079 for the A10-5800K versus 3226 for the A8-3850. In its DiRT 3 test, AMD reported 92.62 fps with Dual Graphics and 52.63 fps with only a Radeon HD 6570 discrete card enabled; the company specified a pre-production system, DDR3-1866, Windows 7 64-bit, 1280×1024 resolution, and medium settings. These are AMD’s own launch-era tests, not results to compare directly with different systems or settings.

Choosing between these chips for an FM2 build

  • For the stronger integrated graphics: The A10-5800K has the Radeon HD 7660D with 384 graphics cores at 800 MHz; the A8-5600K has the Radeon HD 7560D with 256 graphics cores at 760 MHz. Actual performance still depends on the application or game.
  • For CPU-heavy work: The A10 has higher listed base and maximum CPU clocks, but historical tests show results varied by application. Do not infer a universal performance lead from the model name or clock alone.
  • For an existing system: Confirm that the specific FM2 board supports the chosen processor and has the necessary BIOS. Check board documentation for memory support as well; AMD listed DDR3-1866 for these APUs, but that does not establish compatibility for every module or configuration.
  • For a new purchase today: Treat both as legacy components. The 2012 launch specifications do not establish current availability, used-market pricing, operating-system compatibility, driver support, or suitability for a modern workload. Inspect used-part condition and verify the whole system against the intended use before spending money.

At launch, AMD’s corporate vice president of Desktop and Component Products, Leslie Sobon, described the A-Series as “ideal for anyone looking for a new desktop or home theater PC with leading performance for the dollar.” That statement captures AMD’s positioning at the time; whether either APU is appropriate now depends on the condition and compatibility of the FM2 system and the work it needs to do.
