Android 17’s beta introduced several interface and multitasking changes, but Google’s announcements do not identify a separate new feature called “split-screen controls.” The documented changes are App Bubbles and a Bubble Bar, broader large-screen app adaptability, and a floating screen-recording toolbar. They arrived across different beta builds, and Android 17 has since reached its stable release.
What changed in Android 17’s beta UI?
The changes landed in stages rather than as one bundled redesign. Beta 1 focused on how apps behave on large screens; Beta 2 introduced App Bubbles as a windowing mode; Beta 3 fully enabled bubbles and added recording controls that float over the screen.

How Android 17 App Bubbles work
App Bubbles are floating app windows, not simply another name for messaging notification bubbles. Google described them as “a windowing mode feature that offers a new floating UI experience separate from the messaging bubbles API,” in an announcement by Matthew McCullough, VP Product Management, Android Developer. To create one, long-press an app icon in the launcher and choose the bubble option when available. The bubble lets the app stay accessible in a floating window while you use other apps.
What the Bubble Bar does
On large-screen devices, the taskbar includes a Bubble Bar for organizing and moving app bubbles. This gives tablets and foldables a way to keep floating apps accessible alongside other windowed work. What changes for split-screen apps?
Google’s reviewed Android 17 announcements do not confirm a distinct new split-screen control panel, ratio selector or toolbar. The relevant change is broader: Android 17’s large-screen work is intended to make apps adapt to different window sizes, while App Bubbles add a floating-window option alongside side-by-side multitasking.
For apps targeting SDK 37, Android 17 ignores specified orientation, resizability and aspect-ratio constraints on large screens whose smallest dimension is at least 600 dp, subject to exceptions. Google says games are exempt from these restrictions, and users retain system-level control over aspect ratio. This is a developer-facing compatibility requirement, not a newly announced split-screen button. See the Beta 1 details and Android 17 launch overview.

- Large-screen adaptability: apps targeting SDK 37 must accommodate large-screen window sizes under Google’s stated rules.
What changed in Beta 3 screen recording?
Beta 3 added a floating toolbar with screen-recording controls and capture settings. The toolbar stays available while recording, but the system UI itself is excluded from the final video capture. This recording interface is separate from App Bubbles and the large-screen app-windowing changes. Google’s Beta 3 announcement describes the addition.

No. Google announced Android 17’s stable release on June 16, 2026. Its overview includes App Bubbles, the Bubble Bar, large-screen adaptability and desktop-style multitasking: Android 17 launch announcement. A report published October 2, 2026 said QPR3 Beta 1 was rolling out to Pixel testers, so the initial beta builds are not the current stage of the release cycle.
