What Android Motion Assist does
Motion Assist displays small bubbles along the edges of the screen. They move in response to motion detected by the phone’s sensors, including turns, acceleration and braking. Google’s stated aim is to help synchronize visual information with what the body feels, so passengers may find it more comfortable to read, browse or watch content on a phone.
This describes Google’s intended purpose, not a proven treatment. Google says results vary, and its documentation does not give a measured success rate or clinical efficacy statistic. Some users may feel worse while using the feature.
Check requirements and find Motion assist
Google’s stated requirements are a device running Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play Services. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that Motion assist will appear on every device; feature availability can vary.

- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap All services.
- Under Personal & device safety, tap Motion assist.
You can also search for “Motion assist” using the search bar at the top of Settings. Google’s Motion assist setup instructions list these paths and controls.
Turn on automatic activation and add a manual backup
Enable automatic activation
In Motion assist settings, turn on Start in a moving vehicle. The phone will attempt to detect when you are in a moving vehicle and start a session. Google notes that detection may not always work, so do not rely on automatic activation alone.

Add the Quick Settings tile
- On the Motion assist settings page, tap Add tile to Quick Settings.
- Choose Small tile or Large tile.
- When you need manual control, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and tap the Motion assist tile.
You can also add the tile from the Quick Settings edit menu. If automatic activation starts a session, a silent notification appears; tap it to turn Motion Assist off for that session.
Customize the bubbles
Go to Settings > profile icon > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist, then tap Customize. The settings page shows a live preview as you adjust the appearance.

- Opacity: Make the bubbles darker or more transparent.
- Color Theme: Select an available color, such as red, yellow, green or blue.
- Shape: Choose a bubble shape.
- Randomization: Turn periodic changes to the bubbles’ color and shape on or off.
Use Motion Assist safely
Use Motion Assist only as a passenger. Google warns: “Motion assist should not be used while operating a moving vehicle or in other situations requiring full attention to safety.” If the bubbles cause discomfort or your symptoms worsen, stop using the feature.
Motion Assist is not guaranteed to prevent motion sickness or treat a medical condition. Google’s Android feature page says “Results vary” and notes that a small percentage of users may experience worsened symptoms, without quantifying that group.
