After installing Linux, first check whether the affected device is simply disabled, muted, disconnected, or not selected. If those checks do not help, find out whether Linux detects the hardware before installing drivers or firmware. The right next step depends on your Linux distribution, its version, and the exact device—there is no single command or package that fixes every Wi-Fi, sound, or printer problem.

Start with the layer that is failing

Separate the symptom into three questions: is the device visible to Linux, can it connect or play or print, and does it work but produce a poor result? For example, a missing Wi-Fi network is different from a visible network that rejects a password; no audio output listed is different from sound playing through the wrong speakers.

  1. Check simple state and connections. Confirm the relevant switch or setting is on, check cables and power, and verify the network, app, or device is configured as expected.
  2. Check detection. Look in the desktop’s network, sound, or printer settings to see whether Linux lists the hardware or destination.
  3. Only then investigate drivers or firmware. Identify your distribution release and the relevant hardware before following installation instructions. A driver or package for another distribution or device may not apply.

Fix Wi-Fi problems

If Wi-Fi or the network is missing

  • Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and airplane mode is off. Move closer to the router and confirm that the network is not hidden.
  • If Wi-Fi is enabled but no wireless interface or networks appear, determine whether Linux detects the wireless hardware. A network manager can configure a supported interface, but it cannot make an unsupported or undetected device work by itself.
  • Check whether the correct driver and, where needed, firmware are installed for the specific wireless device and Linux release. Fedora’s NetworkManager documentation notes that a driver must be installed for the interface to work and that additional driver or firmware may be needed. It recommends rebooting after installing new driver or firmware. The Fedora Project Wiki also notes: “Many manufacturers of modems and wireless devices provide limited support for Linux.”

If the network is visible but connection fails

  • Re-enter the password carefully and check whether other devices can connect to the same network.
  • Try closer to the router if the signal is weak. If other devices also fail, check the router or modem rather than assuming the Linux computer is at fault.
  • If only this computer fails, distinguish an authentication or saved-connection issue from a driver or hardware problem. Use your distribution’s own network troubleshooting guidance for the release you have installed.

Fedora’s current NetworkManager documentation gives nmcli device status as a way to inspect devices and this example for connecting to a Wi-Fi network: nmcli device wifi connect SSID password PASSWORD. Replace the example values with your network name and password. These are Fedora-context examples, not universal instructions for every Linux distribution.

Fix sound problems

If no sound plays

  1. Check the system volume and mute state, including laptop mute keys or physical switches.
  2. Check the volume and mute controls in the application that should be playing sound.
  3. For headphones or external speakers, confirm they are powered on and connected to the correct port.
  4. Open the desktop’s sound settings, select the intended output, and test the available choices. A computer can list several outputs, including ones that are not connected to the speakers you are using.

If no suitable output device is listed

Identify the audio controller before looking for a driver. Ubuntu’s desktop guidance recommends using lspci to check whether an audio controller is listed; lspci -v provides more detail. The needed driver depends on the audio hardware, so use support instructions for your distribution and device. Do not install an ALSA, PipeWire, PulseAudio, or firmware package by guesswork.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the internal audio hardware remains unusable after diagnosis, an external USB sound card is one possible workaround mentioned in Ubuntu’s guidance. Check chipset and Linux support for the specific adapter before buying; the existence of this category does not establish compatibility for any particular model.

Fix printer problems

For a USB printer

  1. Check that the printer is powered on and the USB cable is securely connected.
  2. Give the desktop a moment to detect it. If it does not install automatically, open Settings > Printers, choose Add Printer, and select the device if it appears.
  3. Print a test page after setup and review the printer options if the result is incomplete or incorrect.

For a network printer

  1. Open Settings > Printers and choose Add Printer.
  2. If the printer is not discovered automatically, enter its network address in the add-printer dialog if you know it.
  3. If it still does not appear, check the model-specific and distribution-specific guidance to determine whether a suitable print driver is needed. Once added, print a test page.

Printer discovery and setup can vary by model and Linux distribution. The basic setup steps do not establish that every printer needs CUPS administration, a vendor driver, or a particular discovery protocol.

When to look for device-specific help

Move from general checks to targeted instructions when Linux does not list the relevant wireless interface, audio controller, or printer, or when it lists the device but cannot use it after checking settings and connections. Note your distribution and release, the device model, and what the desktop detects. Use those details to find instructions for that exact combination rather than copying package-manager commands or firmware names from another system.

Ubuntu’s cited desktop guidance is for Ubuntu 26.04; Fedora’s NetworkManager material tracks version 1.58 for Fedora Linux 44. Their screens and examples are useful in those contexts, but names, commands, available drivers, and setup paths can differ across releases and distributions.
