AMD’s Ryzen 8000HX “Dragon Range-R” is a four-chip Zen 4 laptop processor refresh announced in 2025. Its lead model, the Ryzen 9 8945HX, has 16 cores and 32 threads, boosts up to 5.4 GHz, and is rated for configurable power from 55 to 75 W. The published specifications closely track the previous 7000HX generation, so they establish a modest spec refresh—not a measured performance leap.
What processors are in the Ryzen 8000HX lineup?
AMD’s May 2025 Ryzen consumer quick reference lists four Ryzen 8000HX models under the “Dragon Range-R” name. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. “Total cache” combines the L2 and L3 cache figures.
| Processor | Cores / threads | Base / boost clock | Total cache | TDP range | Architecture |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 8945HX | 16 / 32 | 2.5 / up to 5.4 GHz | 80 MB | 55–75 W | Zen 4 |
| Ryzen 9 8940HX | 16 / 32 | 2.4 / up to 5.3 GHz | 80 MB | 55–75 W | Zen 4 |
| Ryzen 7 8840HX | 12 / 24 | 2.9 / up to 5.1 GHz | 76 MB | 45–75 W | Zen 4 |
| Ryzen 7 8745HX | 8 / 16 | 3.6 / up to 5.1 GHz | 40 MB | 45–75 W | Zen 4 |
These clock, cache and power figures are AMD’s published specifications in its May 2025 Ryzen consumer quick reference guide. TDP range describes the processor’s configurable design power; it does not by itself show how a particular laptop performs under sustained load.
What are the Ryzen 9 8945HX specs?
AMD positions the Ryzen 9 8945HX for premium laptops. Its product page lists a 2.5 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.4 GHz, 16 MB of L2 cache and 64 MB of L3 cache. AMD gives 55 W as its default TDP, with a configurable range of 55–75 W. The processor uses Zen 4 CPU cores fabricated on TSMC 5 nm, with an I/O die made on TSMC 6 nm.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 8945HX also has a two-core Radeon 610M integrated GPU. AMD lists DDR5 SO-DIMM memory in dual-channel configurations, up to 64 GB, with DDR5-5200 specified for the listed configurations. These are platform specifications: the memory a finished laptop supports and includes depends on its design. AMD gives the processor’s launch date as April 23, 2025. Details are on the Ryzen 9 8945HX product page.
How much changed from Ryzen 7000HX?
The 8945HX’s published CPU specifications closely match AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX: both are Zen 4 chips with 16 cores and 32 threads, a 2.5 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.4 GHz, 64 MB of L3 cache, 55 W default TDP and a 55–75 W configurable range. AMD’s product pages provide the 7945HX specifications and 8945HX specifications.

Contemporaneous coverage also described the family as a modest refresh rather than a major redesign. Tom’s Hardware’s April 9, 2025 comparison showed the 8940HX with a 5.3 GHz maximum boost against 5.2 GHz for the 7940HX; several Ryzen 7 counterparts retained the same listed core counts and clocks. TechSpot’s April 10, 2025 report likewise described the specifications as close to the 2023 7000HX series. These are comparisons of published specifications and editorial characterizations, not results from an independent benchmark of the processors.
