VideoSurf was a video-discovery company whose technology analyzed images inside video frames to help people find content. Rather than relying only on titles and other text, its described approach used visual clues—such as faces, people and objects—to rank videos and help users refine searches. Microsoft announced its acquisition of VideoSurf in 2011; the available sources do not establish that VideoSurf is still accessible as a service.
How VideoSurf’s visual search was designed to work
Conventional video search can use titles, descriptions and other metadata. VideoSurf’s central idea was to add information extracted from the video itself. Its patent record describes analyzing video and multimedia, ranking candidate results by visual relevance, and using the ranking of earlier results to suggest follow-up searches. US8364660B2 documents the described techniques; a patent is not independent proof of search quality or evidence that every described feature reached users.
Detecting people and objects
A related application describes extracting and tracking faces, people and other primary objects across video frames. The system could use these detected visual elements to identify material relevant to a query. US20100070523A1 also describes showing representative thumbnails of salient events, scenes or objects. In one example, a user could select images of people or objects in a face-strip interface to reprioritize matching results.
Refining a search with visual summaries
The thumbnail summary was intended to make a result set easier to explore: users could inspect visual moments and select elements that better matched what they sought. The patent describes an interactive design for refining results, not a verified account of a feature that shipped in a particular VideoSurf product.

Identifying a video already playing
A separate patent describes using visual and audio query information to identify a video playing on a display, within a known corpus. US9508011B2 shows that VideoSurf pursued this technical direction in a patent filing; it does not establish a currently available identification service.
VideoSurf’s history and Microsoft acquisition
On November 22, 2011, Microsoft announced that it had acquired VideoSurf, describing it as a California-based video-discovery technology company. The announcement says VideoSurf was founded in 2006 and that Microsoft intended to use its technology to enhance entertainment search across its platform, including Xbox LIVE. The founding date and intended integration are details reported in Microsoft’s announcement, not confirmation of present-day product availability. Microsoft’s November 22, 2011 announcement quoted Alex Garden, then director of Xbox LIVE for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business: “VideoSurf’s content analytics technology will enhance the search and discovery of entertainment content across our platform.”

What is known about VideoSurf today
The acquisition announcement and patent records establish VideoSurf’s historical technology and Microsoft’s 2011 plans, but they do not verify that VideoSurf remains accessible or identify a current successor product using its technology. It is safest to describe VideoSurf as a historical video-discovery company and its patents as descriptions of proposed or claimed methods, rather than present the service as something readers can use today. The cited sources also do not report measured accuracy, speed, adoption, or corpus size, so no performance comparison can be substantiated from them.
