Both Apple’s App Store Connect API and Google’s Android Publisher API let developers retrieve app reviews and publish or update replies. Apple offers more documented controls for filtering and sorting reviews, including filters for territory, rating, and whether a response has been published. Google’s review data can include device and app-version details, and its list method supports pagination and a translation-language parameter. The practical choice is usually not one API over the other: use the API for each store where your app is published, then shape your workflow around the differences below.
How the review APIs compare
| Capability | Apple App Store Connect API | Google Play Developer API |
|---|---|---|
| Store and resource | Customer reviews and developer responses for apps on the App Store. | Reviews for apps on Google Play, through the Android Publisher API. |
| Review retrieval | List reviews for an app or retrieve reviews for a specific App Store version; documented filters include territory, rating, and response state, with sorting by date or rating. The app-level list endpoint has a maximum page limit of 200. Apple customer reviews | Get an individual review or list reviews for an app. The list method supports pagination and an optional translation-language parameter. Google reviews.list |
| Review details | The cited customer-review documentation establishes review retrieval and filtering; it does not establish a comparable set of device and app-version fields in the listed app-level response. | Review data can include rating, text, reviewer language, device and Android OS details, app-version code and name, and thumbs-up/down counts. Google reviews resource |
| Reply management | Create, update, retrieve, or delete your response. Each review can have at most one response. Apple Customer Review Responses | Reply to a review or update an existing reply. Replies longer than approximately 350 characters are rejected, and HTML tags are stripped. Google reviews.reply |
| Authorization | JWT authorization using keys created in an App Store Connect account. App Store Connect API overview | OAuth authorization with the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/androidpublisher scope. Google reviews.list |
Which API fits your review workflow?
Choose Apple’s controls when review selection matters
Apple’s documented filters are useful when a team needs to narrow ingestion or reporting by territory, star rating, or whether a review already has a published response. The API also supports retrieving reviews for a particular App Store version, which can help teams examine feedback associated with a release. Apple documents sorting by date or rating. The app-level customer-review list endpoint allows a maximum limit of 200 per page; design the client to handle further pages rather than treating that limit as the total review count. Choose Google’s fields and translation parameter when they help triage
Google review records can expose device and Android OS information as well as app-version code and name, alongside review text, rating, reviewer language, and any developer reply. That metadata can help route a report for investigation, though the API documentation does not guarantee that every review will contain every optional field. The list method also accepts an optional translationLanguage parameter and uses pagination, so ingestion should follow page tokens or other documented pagination values returned by the API. How replies differ
Apple: one response per review, with deletion available
Apple’s response resource supports retrieving, creating, updating, and deleting a developer response. A customer review can have no more than one response. To post or update one, first obtain the customer-review resource ID and then create or update the response associated with that ID. Because deletion is supported, a workflow can remove a published response when necessary, subject to the production impact of API writes. Apple Customer Review Responses

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Google: reply or update, with a length constraint
Google’s reviews.reply method writes a reply to an individual review and can update an existing reply. The API rejects reply text longer than approximately 350 characters and strips HTML tags. Keep reply text within that documented limit and submit plain text rather than relying on markup. Google reviews.reply

Apple authorization
Apple API calls require JSON Web Tokens created with keys obtained from an App Store Connect account. Apple explicitly warns that “Changes you make using the App Store Connect API affect the production data you use for development and distribution.” Treat reply creation, updates, and deletion as production writes: validate the target review and response content before sending a request. Google authorization
Google’s review-list and reply methods require OAuth authorization with the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/androidpublisher scope. Configure the integration to obtain and use credentials with that scope, and distinguish review reads from reply writes in your application’s own permissions and approval flow. Implementation checklist for a cross-store workflow
- Connect each store separately. These are platform-specific APIs; the cited documentation does not describe a shared cross-store reviews endpoint. Use Apple’s API for App Store reviews and Google’s Android Publisher API for Google Play reviews.
- Keep identifiers platform-specific. Store the source platform alongside each review ID so a reply is sent back through the correct store API.
- Build pagination into ingestion. Apple’s app-level endpoint caps a page at 200; Google’s list method supports pagination. Do not assume one response contains all reviews.
- Retain timestamps when returned. Persist available update timestamps so edits and reply changes can be reconciled during later syncs.
- Choose store-specific filters and fields. Decide whether Apple’s version, territory, rating, and response-state selection is needed, and whether Google’s translation-language option and device or app-version metadata improve triage.
- Make reply submission deliberate. Validate review identity and reply text before writing; account for Apple’s production-data warning and Google’s approximate 350-character limit and HTML stripping.
- Verify operational limits for your integration. The cited API pages do not establish a comparable account-level rate limit for these review APIs, pricing, or support guarantees. Check current constraints for the specific developer accounts and architecture before deployment.
Is one API easier or faster?
The documented capabilities do not establish that either API is universally easier or faster to operate. Apple has richer described review-list filters and response deletion; Google exposes useful review metadata and a translation-language parameter, while imposing the stated reply-text behavior. Choose based on the stores you support and the workflow your team needs, then assess implementation effort against your own account setup and integration architecture.
