First check the exact GitLab version, edition, and deployment against the affected ranges in the current security advisory; then upgrade along GitLab’s supported path to an applicable fixed release. For the September 23, 2026 critical patch notice, GitLab specified different targets by release branch, and those version numbers are a dated snapshot—not evergreen guidance.

Is your self-managed GitLab instance affected?

Do not decide from the major version alone. Record the exact version and whether the installation is Community Edition (CE) or Enterprise Edition (EE), then compare them with the affected-version ranges and edition notes in the relevant GitLab security advisory. Also identify how GitLab is installed and deployed: for example, Linux package, source, Helm, Operator, or Docker, and single-node, multi-node, or Geo topology. Those details determine both whether the advisory applies and which upgrade procedure is supported.

GitLab’s September 23, 2026 critical patch release covered CE and EE and named two critical issues: CVE-2026-85706, a path-traversal issue in the repository commits API, and CVE-2026-87719, an insecure-deserialization issue in the GraphQL subscription serializer. The notice says CVE-2026-87719 affects EE in specified ranges beginning at 18.3 and below the listed fixed versions; check the advisory’s full ranges rather than assuming that either CVE affects every edition, version, or deployment.

Which version should you upgrade to?

The following are the branch-specific targets in GitLab’s September 23, 2026 notice. Use them only after confirming that your exact installation falls within the advisory’s affected range. Check GitLab’s live advisory before acting, because later security releases may have superseded these targets.

Installed branch named in the notice Target stated in the September 23, 2026 notice Important qualification
18.11 18.11.12 Backport for the named security fixes; does not include other fixes available in newer supported lines.
19.0 19.0.9 Backport for the named security fixes; does not include other fixes available in newer supported lines.
19.1 19.1.8 or later The notice says this release includes the named security fixes.
19.2 19.2.6 or later The notice says this release includes the named security fixes.
19.3 19.3.2 or later The notice says this release includes the named security fixes.

GitLab said the fixes first appeared in 19.3.2, 19.2.6, and 19.1.8 on September 10, 2026, then were backported for 18.11 and 19.0. The older-branch backports address the named vulnerabilities; they are not equivalent to receiving every fix available on a newer supported line.

Can you install the patch without upgrading through every release?

Not necessarily. GitLab’s upgrade-path documentation specifies the supported sequence for the installation and target version; some environments require intermediate stops. Follow that sequence even when the security advisory calls for an urgent upgrade. Do not skip a required stop to reach a fixed version faster.

  1. Check the applicable route. Use GitLab’s upgrade-path guidance and the procedure for your deployment type and topology. The general upgrade guide separates procedures for single-node, multi-node, Helm, Operator, and self-compiled installations.
  2. Identify required stops. Determine whether the route includes intermediate versions and which patch release to use at each stop.
  3. Complete background migrations. Follow GitLab’s instructions to let required background migrations finish before proceeding to the next stop.
  4. Plan around operational constraints. Review the applicable maintenance and downtime procedure. GitLab documents multi-node processes with and without downtime; do not assume either is suitable for your topology or promise zero downtime.

What should you prepare before upgrading?

Plan recovery before changing the installation. Review version and operating-system compatibility, release and upgrade notes, health checks, and Geo-specific instructions if Geo is in use. Set a maintenance plan, document rollback steps, and make a backup or appropriate complete snapshots. Test the upgrade and restoration process on a production-like clone when feasible.

  • Include the configuration and secrets needed to recover. For Linux package installations, securely preserve /etc/gitlab and certificates separately from application backups. GitLab warns that gitlab-secrets.json contains database encryption keys for data such as two-factor authentication secrets and secure CI variables; losing it can make encrypted data or accounts inaccessible.
  • Use the backup procedure for your installation type. The Linux-package configuration guidance does not automatically apply to Helm, Operator, Docker, or source deployments; use their respective procedures.
  • Check restore prerequisites. GitLab’s restoration instructions require a matching version and edition in relevant cases. Confirm the specific prerequisites for your backup before relying on it as a rollback plan.

How do you apply the security fix?

Use GitLab’s documented upgrade procedure for the actual installation method and topology, following every required stop. The advisory’s urgency does not make a universal command sequence safe: commands and ordering can differ between a Linux package, a self-compiled installation, Helm, Operator, or Docker, and between single-node and multi-node environments. If you cannot follow the supported route within your operational constraints, escalate through the appropriate GitLab support channel rather than improvising an in-place upgrade.

How do you verify the upgrade and recovery?

After each required upgrade stage, use the documented pre- and post-upgrade health checks. Confirm that background migrations have completed before moving to another stop. Once the target release is installed, verify the resulting version, confirm the UI and core services work, and review logs and monitoring for errors.

  • Where GitLab documents a secrets-decryption check for your installation, run it to help verify that preserved encryption keys remain usable.
  • Confirm that the backup and configuration needed for recovery are present and that the documented restoration prerequisites are understood.
  • Record the final version and the outcome of validation checks for your operational record.

What should you harden after patching?

A security release fixes the issues covered by that release; it does not replace a review of authentication, access, or network exposure. Apply controls that fit your organization’s identity setup and enabled GitLab services.

  • Review sign-in security. Enforce two-factor authentication in a way that accounts for upstream single sign-on policies, and retain recovery codes securely. Review administrator accounts and remove access that is no longer needed. GitLab supports WebAuthn; whether a FIDO2 security key is usable depends on the organization’s GitLab and identity-provider configuration.
  • Review visibility and integrations. Check project and group visibility defaults, integrations, and enabled Git access protocols against actual organizational requirements.
  • Limit network exposure. GitLab’s operating-system guidance identifies ports 80 and 443 as sufficient for basic use, with HTTP redirected to HTTPS. Other enabled services may need additional access; restrict those paths to the hosts or networks that need them instead of exposing them broadly.
  • Protect recovery material. Keep configuration, encryption secrets, and recovery information in secure backups with access controls appropriate to their sensitivity.

How should administrators track future disclosures?

Use GitLab’s security release posts and live advisory details to check affected versions, CVE identifiers, and recommended fixed releases whenever a disclosure applies to your installation. GitLab’s security FAQ recommends the latest security release for the supported version. Its coordinated disclosure policy says vulnerabilities are generally made public via its issue tracker 90 days after the fix is released; treat that as GitLab’s stated disclosure policy, not as a guarantee that every issue follows an identical timeline.
