Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a first layer that sticks without risking the nozzle or build plate, start with the exact printer, filament, and plate surface—not a Z-offset copied from someone else. Clean and correctly seat the plate, run the printer maker’s calibration routine, and judge the test pattern: the filament should form a continuous line that is slightly flattened, without gaps or ridges.
Why won’t my first layer stick to the bed?
A first layer can fail because the nozzle is too far from the plate, but that is only one possibility. Grease or debris, a mismatched plate profile, uneven leveling, unsuitable settings, inconsistent extrusion, a worn or obstructed nozzle, or a model with too little contact area can also cause lifting. Changing Z height before checking the basics can make a different problem worse.
Start by identifying the printer model, filament, build-plate type or coating, and the plate selected in the slicer. Follow the printer and filament makers’ guidance for that combination. For example, Bambu Lab’s H2C manual says to match the physical plate to the filament and select the corresponding plate in Bambu Studio; those instructions are specific to the H2C, not universal menus or requirements (Bambu Lab H2C manual, Chapter 9).
Check and clean the plate before adjusting Z offset
Let the plate cool as its manufacturer directs. Remove loose debris, then check that the plate is flat, undamaged, and seated correctly. Clean it using a method compatible with its exact surface or coating. Cleaning advice is not interchangeable: Bambu’s H2C manual recommends warm water and neutral detergent for its plate guidance, while Prusa’s general troubleshooting article discusses IPA for some materials and makes an exception for PETG. Follow the instructions for your own plate rather than applying either method to every surface (Bambu Lab H2C manual, Chapter 9; Prusa: How to fix the most common 3D printing errors).

Keep fingerprints, grease, and residue off the print area. Prusa’s support guidance also identifies sheet placement, sheet profiles, and surface damage as possible sources of first-layer trouble. If you use interchangeable plates, confirm the correct one is installed and that the printer or slicer is using the appropriate profile. Prusa specifically advises separate first-layer calibration for its smooth and textured sheets; do not assume another printer uses the same profile system (Prusa: First layer issues; Prusa MINI/MINI+ calibration).
Run the printer’s own first-layer calibration
Use the leveling and calibration procedure in the manual for your exact printer. Re-run it when the manufacturer calls for it—for example, after relevant nozzle or extruder changes, major assembly work, or moving the printer. Do not use a Z-offset number found for a different machine: even printers of the same model can need different settings, and the value may change over time and use.

On Prusa MINI/MINI+ and i3 printers, the calibration pattern is used to set nozzle-to-bed distance while observing the extruded line. Prusa’s stated target is filament that adheres and looks “slightly squished.” Its i3 procedure uses a zig-zag pattern; assess the result rather than aiming for a number from another printer (Prusa MINI/MINI+ calibration; Prusa i3 calibration).
First Layer Too High/Too Low: read the test pattern
Make only small adjustments, then watch the line or test square again. A good pattern is even and continuous: it has no gaps between passes and no ridges from excessive squashing.

| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Round, loose strands; gaps between lines; filament does not stay on the plate | The nozzle may be too far from the plate, or the surface may be dirty or incompatible with the selected profile. | Check cleanliness and plate selection, then make a small correction using the printer’s calibration routine. |
| Continuous line that is slightly flattened, with an even surface and no gaps or ridges | The first-layer height looks reasonable. | If the actual print still lifts, investigate other causes instead of continuing to lower the nozzle. |
| Ridges, heavily spread filament, or extrusion that looks extremely thin or transparent | The nozzle may be too close to the plate. | Stop lowering it. Make a small correction in the opposite direction and recheck the pattern. |
Too-low settings can damage hardware. Bambu Lab warns that a first layer set too low, over part or all of the plate, may cause print failure or damage the nozzle or build plate (Bambu Lab H2C manual, Chapter 9). If the nozzle is pressing into the plate, stop the print rather than letting it continue.
The first layer does not stick to the print surface: troubleshoot in order
- Verify the setup. Confirm the filament and physical plate, then check that the slicer’s plate selection matches. Use the recommended profile for the material and printer.
- Inspect and clean. Remove debris and grease with a coating-compatible method. Check that the plate is undamaged and seated correctly.
- Calibrate and inspect the pattern. Run the maker’s routine and adjust in small increments. A good calibration line should be even, continuous, and slightly flattened—not round and loose or crushed into ridges.
- If the pattern is good, look beyond Z height. Check leveling or surface unevenness, temperatures, extrusion consistency, nozzle condition, and whether the model has enough area touching the plate. Prusa’s i3 guidance likewise points to sheet cleanliness, settings, leveling or XYZ calibration, and under-extrusion when calibration appears correct (Prusa i3 calibration).
- Change print settings one at a time. First confirm the printer and material profiles and their recommended temperatures. If those checks do not resolve the problem, consider a slower initial layer within the profile’s guidance, then test again.
- Increase the contact area if the part has a small footprint. A brim adds first-layer area around the part and can help resist lifting. Use an adhesion aid only if the plate and material instructions recommend it.
- Follow model-specific service guidance for mechanical symptoms. Nozzle seating, alignment, and other components require printer-specific procedures. Power down and allow the machine to cool before maintenance when its maker’s instructions require it.
When to try a brim, glue, temperature, or speed change
Brim for a small footprint
A brim can help when a part has little area in contact with the plate by extending the footprint. It does not correct a dirty surface, incorrect plate profile, poor calibration, or inconsistent extrusion, so address those first.

Adhesion aids only when the surface guidance calls for them
Glue or another aid is not a substitute for cleaning or calibration, and it is not appropriate for every plate. Prusa’s general troubleshooting advice mentions a separating agent for PETG; Bambu’s H2C manual says glue may be applied if needed. Check the instructions for the specific plate and filament before using one (Prusa: How to fix the most common 3D printing errors; Bambu Lab H2C manual, Chapter 9).
Temperature and initial-layer speed
Use the manufacturer-recommended material profile as the baseline, and change only one setting at a time. Prusa’s older general troubleshooting article suggests trying a 5–10 °C increase in bed temperature for experimental material and reducing speed to about 75% for the first three layers if earlier checks fail. These are suggestions in that article, not universal settings for all printers, plates, or filaments. Verify any change against the current guidance for your specific setup (Prusa: How to fix the most common 3D printing errors).

How do I adjust the Z offset?
Use the live Z or first-layer adjustment provided by your printer only as part of its documented calibration routine. Watch the test pattern as you make small corrections: the goal is an even, continuous line that is slightly flattened. If it remains round or separates, the nozzle may be too high; if it forms ridges or becomes extremely thin, it may be too low. A numeric value has no universal meaning across printers, plate surfaces, or calibration systems.
For a printer-specific procedure, use the maker’s current manual and support page. The Prusa MINI/MINI+ and i3 procedures differ, and Bambu’s H2C leveling and plate instructions apply to that model. Do not treat their steps or labels as instructions for another printer.
